Trump is trying to win over moderates and independents. He can’t win re-election with only a conservative base.

Trump can't win without that conservative base either. For every "moderate" (liberal) Trump gains, he will lose ten conservatives.

He might have a chance going after blue collar voters, if any of them know what a tariff is.

Liberals are 20% of the electorate, conservatives are around 30% and the vast floating middle are 50%.

Whoever gets most of the middle wins an election - they’re literally swing voters - can go either way.

It makes no sense for Trump to win over liberals - they will never vote for him. But moderates are persuadable.

And if he can get them, he’s a lock for re-election. All Trump has to do is Alinksyite any Democrat who might be nominated as out of the mainstream and too extreme for most Americans.

He’s already on the job.

You misunderstand. Those moderate voters are going to flock to Trump by default. Trump is not going to appease them by watering down conservatism, thereby losing conservatives in the process.
