It’s imperative that Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel release video recordings of what his deputies did, and didn’t do, outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while Nikolas Cruz was on a killing spree inside.
First, Israel himself has said that the public needs to know this information. He’s right, and he should accommodate the people on whose behalf he and his deputies work. This is an extraordinary case in which his department bears a large share of responsibility for Cruz getting as far as he did without interference. Warning signs about Cruz’s dangerous mental state had come to the department’s attention over at least a decade.
Instead, Israel refuses to release the recordings, arguing that they are exempt from the state’s public record laws. He says that they reveal security plans and are part of ongoing investigations.
Reveal security plans? Nonsense. By the sheriff’s own admission, whatever security plans the Broward Sheriff’s Office had in place failed horribly when Cruz killed 17 people and injured 15. On Feb. 22, Israel disclosed the shocking information that school resource officer Scot Peterson stood outside for four minutes while the Cruz was inside, firing an AR-15.

During his laugable reelection campaign in 2016, Israel proudly toted his accomplishments of “sharply reduc(ing) violent crime and burglary rates,” as well as his “innovative initiatives” to keep students in school and out of jail, the Sun Sentinel reported.
Those campaign statistics were nothing more than a smokescreen......even outright lies this turkey got a stupid electorate to gobble up.
In 2013, a year after Isreal duped a bunch of the dolts into electing him, The Broward County School Board and District Superintendent made an agreement with Broward County Law enforcement officials to essentially stop arresting students for any crimes whatsoever b/c they were being committed by minority criminals.
Also whipping Broward into shape, then-pres Obama and his henchmen at The NAACP. Thus—NO DAMAGING POLICE RECORDS ON-FILE for the minority class---the ones committing all the crimes.

His focus was not on prevention of crime, it was on control of arrest statistics.
why was management of those statistics sufficient for him to remain employed for so long..?
because so many power holders in that county were insulated from the actual effects of those policies.
It’s basically a Florida version of what Victor Davis Hanson elucidates in the case of California:
that there are two Lifestyles; one for the very rich and very liberal who live in gated communities, away from the consequences of the liberal policies they Lobby for, and then the ordinary people, who have to live with the effects of those policies and get shot.

Just such a condition was projected by one season of the Wire. The politics in Baltimore absolutely controlled the police leadership to the point the police were effectively prevented from police work.
The actual police on the job tried to act but were repeatedly thwarted. Some gave in and ate donuts.
Sheriff Israel’s plan: If you can’t steal taxpayer funds by lowering actual crime, then you simply quit reporting any crimes.
