Necklacing is an old African custom. It was already described by European colonizers and explorers back in the 18th century. Samuel Baker detailed how it works in his books about the exploration of the Nile. The aim of such public cruelty is to prolong the suffering of the victim and to please the sadist instinct of the crowd.

So the ANC hasn’t “pioneered” anything, it only shows the savage roots of Africa don’t disappear with the modern age.
