U.S. Aircraft Carrier Flexes Muscle Deep In South China Sea In Defiance Of China
Breitbart ^ | 2-1-2018 | Edwin Mora

The USS Carl Vinson, a massive nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, reportedly sailed deep in the South China Sea amid U.S.-China tensions over Beijing’s territorial disputes with several American allies in the region. “It shows resolve, and gives decision space to our leaders,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Doug Verissimo, the ship’s commanding officer, referring to the presence of the warship on the South China Sea, the Australian Broadcasting Network (ABC) reported.

The captain noted:

When they put a carrier strike group somewhere it helps to show that the United States is interested. We don’t have a lot of these, so when you put one in a certain area, it has some influence. Of course, it also gives our diplomats time and space to negotiate and make decisions, ultimately to try and prevent any type of armed conflict.

The Filipino newspaper, the Inquirer, recently described the super-carrier as a “floating city,” noting that it houses 72 aircraft, mostly fighter jets, and 5,000 sailors.

Without revealing where exactly the U.S. is planning to sail during its mission, the commander of the Carl Vinson strike group, Rear Adm. John Fuller, added, “I will say our navigation is very good and we know where international law says we can operate and I know where international law says we can’t. And we’re going to do what international law says we can do.”

“the defensive armaments aboard our main battle carriers - and their escorts - perform as promised.”

They’ve already been proven several times.

Most recently when the Houthi’s fired a supersonic Sunburn missile at a US DDG near the mouth of Persian Gulf. In fact two were fired and both shot down before they got within 5 miles.

It is considered the most advance missile threat in operation against US Naval ships.

Sure, China brags about a maneuverable ballistic missile, but nobody has seen it yet. And there’s no reason to believe it’s more effective.

You’re right, if Communist China ever sinks a U.S. aircraft carrier, one or two of dozens of nukes detonating over China, launched by one of our boomers right off their coast, might fail.

This is an Armageddon scenario that I pray never materializes, but in my heart I realize is ultimately inevitable.

China, now there’s a threat. Unlike Syria.

Let us trust and pray that we will not one day in some Orwellian scenario awake to learn that U.S. Navy battle carriers have been sunk by enemy missiles. They are floating targets, detroyer escorts be damned.

What would you suggest our response be if that happened?

Hope they don’t get T-boned by a freighter!
That would be the third in a short time over there.
And the Navy was once a proud organization.

No, that’s reality China fully understands if were ever lucky enough to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier. And the same reason why they’ll likely never try it.

"Additionally, every other country knows that the price of a US Aircraft Carrier is existential war."

Great statement, any attack on a US Carrier has the potential to bring total destruction to any nation, including China and Russia.

You’d be surprised at what the picture didn’t show as far as “back-up” and at the systems designed to protect them from such missiles.....support “vessels” surrounding her and lots of anti-missile defenses. Not to mention that an all-out attack on one of our carriers would quite possibly elicit the same response as if they attacked the mainland USA.....

Death is inevitable.

Most other things aren’t, including nuclear war and/or sinking of US aircraft carriers.

Your “indefeatable” characterization of a weapons system shows that either your understanding of weapons systems is flawed, you have a defeatist mindset, or you have an emotional stake on the “other” side.

Not saying this in a derogatory sense towards you, I have never read your posts on FR (just never came across them) so I don’t know your style.

But there is no such thing as an “indefeatable” weapon.

Any weapon may be countered, even if a weapon system achieves initial successes. Man began using their fists until other men countered them with clubs, which were countered by shields and spears, etc.

That is, always has been, and always will be the nature of war.
