Awards season is in full swing in California, and the Golden State just took home a booby prize of its own.
California ranks dead last among U.S. states in quality of life, according to a study by U.S. News, ranking behind New Jersey (49th) and Indiana (48th).
The ignominious honor reflects California's low marks in the sub-categories of environmental quality and social engagement. The latter category measures voting participation and community bonds.
Californians scored poorly in part because they're simply insufferable, U.S. News suggested.
"In addition to a healthy environment, a person's quality of life is largely a result of their interactions with those around them," the magazine wrote in a blurb accompanying the results.
One way to measure quality life is whether residents can even afford to have a roof over their heads, and by that standard, California is failing.

A 2017 Harvard University report said that one-third of renters in the Los Angeles area are "severely rent burdened," meaning they spend at least half their income on housing. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles County has increased 67%, according to Zillow's Rent Index, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Homelessness has surged a stunning 75 percent in the last six years, the Los Angeles Times reports, and there are now at least 55,000 homeless people in the county.
U.S. News ranked each state in seven other areas, which were weighted based on a survey that determined their importance to the public: health care, education, economy, opportunity, infrastructure, crime and corrections, and fiscal stability.

This is why they want to end the electoral college vote tally. California is useless to them now. We know it goes Democrat and it’s # of votes is fixed as a state. Adding more illegals is pointless. Just took the stupid fools long enough to figure that out?
“Interactions with those around them?”
I lived in California for 17 years, back in the days when it was still good.
Neighbors barely knew one another. It’s an automobile culture. Neighbors came and went....people kept to themselves.
I left California in 1973, I still had some flowers in my hair, ahem.
(BTW, that song was written by John Phillips (Mama's & Papas) in about 20 minutes. He gave it to his friend Scott McKenzie, Scott's only hit)
My neighbor is an immigrant from New Zealand. He says he can no longer afford to go 'home.'
In the late 80’s John Phillips was touring with a reformed version of the Mamas and the Papas. It included Spanky McFarland from Spanky and Our Gang (who actually sounded a fair bit like Cass Elliot), Scott McKenzie and Phillips’ daughter Mackenzie from One Day at a Time (named after Scott McKenzie I presume).
When they came to town our local paper did an extended interview with John Phillips. He explained how back in the days of the original group his then-wife Michelle Phillips did not allow her wedding ring to prevent her from jumping in the sack with any guy she fancied. Apparently one of her favorites was Denny Doherty, who was the other male vocalist in the group.
Phillips said sometimes she’d be doing the deed in the next room while he was sitting at a piano trying to write songs.
“Words of love so soft and tender won’t win a girl’s heart anymore.” What on earth do you think was going on as THAT line was being written?
And complained about (I am thinking of a lib I know) by the very people who keep voting for this stuff.
Thanks LIB lunatics. This is the result of lunatics running the asylum. Hahaha.
Don’t cry for John Phillips. He was banging his own daughter for years.
Left in 78. Never been back.
California has become a toilet for illegals and homeless. Most of the real people left are in total agreement that this State is a communists controlled garbage pile of corrupt officials.
Leftists destroy everything they touch.
So that was a good excuse to sexually molest his daughter I guess.
This is truly sad. I live in LA for 2 years ‘75 to ‘77 and, as a kid coming from New Jersey, it was sheer paradise: beautiful weather all the time, palm trees, gorgeous manicured and landscaped buildings and homes everywhere, cheap gas, wide open freeways (most of the time), English spoken everywhere, friendly, easy-going people, beautiful beaches, parks, mountain trails, iconic Hollywood attractions and, for the most part, the “LGBTQ” crowd was still in the closet.
Like everything else, liberals destroyed this American paradise.
“Yay! New Mexico is finally not in last place for something!”
ROTFLOL!
I've heard the same about Michelle and Denny. Cass had a big crush on Denny too.
John was older than the other three...in fact...I've heard him described as being from the Elvis generation.
Stevie Nicks did the same in Fleetwood Mac. Mic's and John's wives both left because of affairs with Stevie. Mic's wife was the sister of George Harrison's wife, Patty Boyd. Patty eventually married Eric Clapton who wrote the song Layla about her.
That has got to be the oddest list.
I'm actually thinking about retiring to North Dakota because the weather is so brutal and there's all that hate for fracking that liberals won't dare move there.
colder climates = fewer homeless
My home state of Minnesota is rated #2
Just like the Vikings. Always coming in 2nd....
Everybody knows whose fault that is!
I always did enjoy watching his brother play ball!
