About 20 years ago I hired a car to take me from Umlaanga Rocks into Durban. The driver was Indian.

We drove for miles through a suburb where every home had high walls, razor wire, driveway gates, and signs showing a guard with an AK-type rifle promising “armed response”.

I asked the driver if this was common.

“Oh yes, just like in America!”

It wasn’t true then, and it’s not true now.

And things are worse, there, now.

Yes, NOT at all like how things are here, now, or ever.
