President Donald Trump held a freewheeling White House meeting on Wednesday to discuss various gun-control measures, at one point jabbing a Republican senator over his reluctance to raise the age of all gun purchases to 21 from 18.
"I think you're afraid of the NRA," Trump said to Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, arguing that raising the age limit was "something we have to think about."
"A lot of people are afraid to bring it up," Trump said, referring to the National Rifle Association's vehement opposition to the proposal. Some Democrats, such as Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, smiled and nodded at Trump's remarks.
Toomey said his reservations were due to fear that such a regulation would punish the "vast majority" of 19- and 20-year-olds in his state who own rifles or shotguns and are "law-abiding citizens."

The voting age was established at 18 by a Constitutional amendment. Military service is Federal law (Congress can change it). Drinking age is state law.
Too bad ours died somewhere between 1861 - 1865.
It was wounded between 1861 and 1865, but I don’t think it actually started dying until Woodrow Wilson became president.
Most rational people do not have a problem with them doing something.....but that something needs to make a difference. Raising the age to buy a gun is not going to make a difference. If they want one to kill people theyll get one, illegally. They already do. How many guns used in gang murders, etc. do you think have been legally purchased and registered? I bet that I, a law abiding citizen, could buy an illegal gun if I wanted to.
They should be talking about how to harden all the soft targets and gun free zones instead of this nonsense. Age limits on guns is an ant hill compared to the real problem.
He should not have made the NRA crack. It’s exactly what MSM wanted and they will run with it. All the corporate cowards were getting blow back for abandoning the NRA this will take the steam out of that.
Valid point, though the rot set in quickly in the aftermath of the war between the states.
Yes, drinking age is the prerogative of the states - as long as any state that sets its drinking age lower than 21 is prepared to lose most or all of its federal [tax dollar] highway funding.
Indeed it did.
Ivanka and Jared need to move back to Manhattan — pronto.
Yes, there’s that. I was simply identifying the legal source of the various ages.
Where I live fathers take their 12 yo sons out hunting and hand them the rifle, which they already knew how to use.
What we have mostly are snowmobile accidents, btw.
So they already know how to use a gun and probably have one before the age of 18 as a gift.
In the metro areas of the country we have 18 year olds who have been on medication all their lives and are products of single mothers who rob, kill, murder, rape, and steal.
Gun owners are the NRA, Mr. President. Americans!
Great, let’s also raise the age for voting, for joining the military and for registering for Selective Service.
The culture has been long been pushing off adulthood as long as possible.
Except when it comes to deciding on self-mutilation (so-called “gender reassignment”), baby killing (parental consent to girls obtaining abortions) and gay sex (longstanding Lefty push to lower the ‘age of consent’)
As far as I am concerned, my son has owned a rifle since he was 8 years old. I control his access to it, but it is his rifle.
Yes, and it stinks.
The federal blackmail, I mean, not the rifle.
“It was wounded between 1861 and 1865, but I dont think it actually started dying until Woodrow Wilson became president.”
That bears repeating.
So who is Trump afraid off? Liberal gun grabbers who would never vote for him anyway?
