IIRC, the ACLU argued successfully, that the mentally ill should have legal control over themselves. They cannot easily be committed unless they agree to it and, if they don’t want to be committed, there are so many hoops to jump through for a relative/friend to commit them. A catastrophic failure of our culture.......and the failure belongs to the ACLU/Liberal policies.

How can mentally ill people have control over themselves? It makes no sense whatsoever.

I saw this first hand with a former coworker. She has a son who is extremely schizophrenic. She figured out early on that she could do nothing to help him. She tried for years to get him into a state facility. Eventually, this kid lost it and killed her parents.
