I doubt anyone wants it to happen again. There are several tens of thousands of school campuses K-12 in the USA. We've had school shootings at probably, still less then 100 schools since they started around 30 years ago. The probability of one happening at any given school is tiny. But it is at the point where something should be done and training some faculty to have firearms at school seems reasonable, and additional, full-time security is probably needed at most schools, anyway. Then better ways to control who comes and goes during the day.

But there is no perfect way to secure a school because of the very nature of the setting and the large number of people who come and go. A sniper from a few hundreds yards away could shoot a few people. But there are reasonable steps that need to be taken.

The probability of one happening again is 100%.

If we do not want our treasure taken, we are going to have to guard it.

Or remove it from the school that refuses to guard it.

Taking no steps, or sitting around arguing about pointless gun control tells me that we want it to happen again, because we are currently, as of right, now doing absolutely nothing to stop it from happening again, which it most certainly will.
