President Donald Trump is reportedly open to raising the federal tax on gasoline and diesel by 25 cents to pay for the White House's infrastructure plan.

The current taxes, which have not been raised in nearly 25 years, are 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel.

At least some Republican lawmakers and many conservative groups are opposed to hiking the federal fuel levy.

“Explain why you feel that regressive is a bad thing.”

People should question whether ‘regressive is bad’. Personally, I’d like to see the lower classes with a bit more skin in the game. As it is they’re getting a free ride on federal income taxes if they make less than $50k and have kids (in fact, they’re getting paid by Uncle Sam).

“eliminate the federal gas tax & fully privatize all the interstates”

Good plan. I’ll save $160 in the gas tax and spend $2500 on tolls on the ‘privatized’ interstates.

“I have a better idea; repeal Davis-Bacon. The wages on public works projects are stratospheric.”

Trump’s looking at that separately - but good luck getting the 60 votes. That’s part of the push towards ‘private’ highways - although drivers still come out WAY BEHIND.

Are alternative fuel and electric vehicles exempt? Will bike paths have toll booths?

only if the government runs the interstates

everything the gov’t touches gets expensive and lower in quality.

.25 cent raise in the cost of fuel? Everything that moves by truck will go up significantly; ‘everything that moves by truck’ is defined these days as everything. So any economic gains made by us peons will be deleted, nullified, gone.

Evil me would limit spending to states with 100% cooperation with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

So, Commiefornia and all the states with “sanctuary cities” would get nothing. . .

Tell that to the people paying over $1.00 per mile on I-66.

What about the ever increasing numbers of vehicles that are not using gasoline or diesel, but are using the roads?

How do they pay this extra federal road tax?

That’s the good thing about his tweets. We know it’s from him and not the whore media with their “unnamed sources”.

I-66 isn’t fully privatized. It’s a gov’t public-private partnership & heavily regulated = the worst of all worlds.

Whatever - do the country a favor - try it elsewhere first and see how the experiment works. I’m still happy they tried Marxism in Russia before trying it here.

Nonsense.

It’s a use tax. If you don’t want to pay for the roads, don’t drive on them.

Not a federal role anyway.

Get to know your Constitution.

I have no objection to using a gas tax to pay for infrastructure improvement. The infrastructure proposal, unlike the vast majority of Fedgov projects, is a legitimate and necessary use of public funds. As to how to pay for it - a gas tax is far preferable to raising income taxes or to increasing the national debt by not having some kind of tax to pay for it at all.

My only condition would be having some clause to say that not a cent raised by the gas tax be used for anything other than infrastructure improvements, with a sundown clause that either phases out the gas tax or compensates it with an equal reduction in income taxes once key projects are implemented.

I’m familiar with the Constitution. I’m not in favor of the Federal government taxing us for roads—all taxes should be as local as possible. I’d prefer private toll roads over anything else, actually. However, if the choice is for the Feds to tax income to pay for roads or to levy a gas tax instead, the latter is the better choice.
