We definitely have gone over the edge....
Go into a Sheetz (and I imagine others) and there is a sign on the pumps that must be 16 to pump gas...
Funny, your 14 yo daughter can get an abortion and YOU have ‘no say’ in it.
Funny, your 14 yo daughter and/or son can get birth control and YOU have ‘no say’ in it.
Funny, your 14 yo he/she or it, can declare what gender they feel like being today.
BUT your 14 yo he/she/ or it can’t pump gas in their grandfather/grandmothers car....
THATS the spirit and we wonder why when they get to be 18 they don’t know which end of a broom or shovel to use..
Life or death, eh? And when the kid ultimately kills herself, as she is very likely to do, it will no doubt be blamed entirely on the parents for resisting the efforts of the benign state to chop her up and pretend she is something she can never be.
Your post makes a lot of sense. But I’d like to mention another point of view.
If she wanted to smoke pot, would you say not to fight it? How about full body tattoos or extensive piercing? Anything?
There are some times when fighting a losing battle is the point. There are times when kids, even 17 year old kids, want their parents to say “no”. They want their parents to save them from themselves. They want their parents to make an effort to show that they care enough to fight for them. Even if it’s a losing battle.
The world is a scary place for a defiant toddler. The toddler would be terrified to find out he was running the show. Similarly, a 17 year old, on the brink of adulthood, can behave like a toddler, desperate for an adult to care enough to protect him. Or in this case, her.
Who knows what this kid’s history is with her parents? Maybe she needs to be left alone and allowed to make her own mistakes. Or maybe she needs her parents to get involved. I think a sex change is a pretty drastic mistake for “learning from your mistakes.”
Also, on the parents’ mental health side, if I didn’t fight to protect my child from a drastic mistake, I would have a hard time forgiving myself for it down the road. I could imagine a parent saying “if only I had fought to prevent this for one more year ...” A lot of what kids do at that age is because of the influence of peers or another highly influential person, maybe a teacher egging her on. Remove her from that influence and she might have different ideas.
From what I’ve read, the hormone treatment runs about $1,500 a year. There are ailments where hormone treatment would be part of a normal insurance policy, but I doubt that regular coverage would include this for transgender stuff. If you were looking at the whole package...drugs, surgery, hormone stuff...you’d be talking at $20,000 to $25,000 for your basic episode of transgendering.
I would suspect that the parents are worried that the hormones are step one, and the surgery cost will be stuck upon them. Most middle-class American parents would not be able to cover this kind of bill and you’d have to worry about the kid coming up in three years to tell you the operation was a failure, and they want to revert back to the ‘self’. They’d then ask for another $20,000 to revert back.
Could be she wants this to come under her parent’s insurance if it is covered. Maybe coverage ends if she is 18 and not in school.
I’d bet she’ll do herself in if she has the operation......her problem isn’t how she sees her identity sexually. It’s her own struggle with issues much deeper than that. Surgery does not change ‘the mind’.
whatever she pleases to herself in a year, when she is a legal adult.
Wait, I thought they were children until they turned 27 so they could stay on the parents insurance. Remember that obummer cluster?
Then the treatments/surgery to reverse it, and the psych bill.
Because filling up any adolescent with hormones is always a good idea. //sarc
Seriously, this is not a good idea period. Just based on the risks to the kids body.
Gender confusion is a treatable mental disorder. It is criminal to allow hormone treatments, do you not agree?
It is crazy to allow doctors to mutilate insane people.
When are we going to wake up?
At 17 many of todays’ kids aren’t smart/wise/responsible enough to decide what color shirt to wear, yet there’s even a question of letting this mush-head make a life-altering choice like this?
