Earlier this year, Bob Smith, owner of the Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School, opened his mailbox to find a notice from the state of California threatening to shut him down. The notice said that Bob was violating state law by admitting students to his horseshoeing school who hadnt first graduated from high school or passed an equivalent government-approved exam.
A few months later, Esteban Narez, a ranch hand working odd jobs, applied to attend PCHSs eight-week course. Hed heard from other PCHS graduates that shoeing horses was a great way to turn his love of working with horses into a stable profession that would help him better support himself and his family.
But because Esteban hasnt graduated from high school, Bob was forced to deny his application.
For students with limited education, trade schools like Bobs are often the best opportunity to learn a skill and join a trade that empowers them to earn an honest living. By denying students right to a quality education in a profession of their choice, Californias prerequisite education law hurts the very students it was intended to help.

In addition to fighting abusive licensing and government regulation, IJ also defends people whose property is being threatened by eminent domain and people who have had their money confiscated on the basis that it "might" be related to drug crimes.
Ping to those who commented on the story about an attempt by veterinary interests to force farriers out of business.
What was the title of the vet/farrier story
There is no telling what a person might do if they are self-sustaining - they might become a conservative.
we can’t have that now - can we?
“to turn his love of working with horses into a stable profession”
Unintended pun in a serious article.
Good catch! I missed that. :-)
California govt is a horse`s ass.
Sounds like a job for California legislators to fix.
Legislators cannot be depended upon to uphold people’s rights. Most of them are for sale to the highest bidder. That is why we need organizations like IJ to defend people and why we have a Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Had to be intentional. Not bad.
its like union firemen...they hate volunteer firemen and often push standards at the state level that limits or eliminates volunteer fire fighters....
Funny.
I used to teach at a for-profit school in Arizona.
I was qualified to teach there because I had a four year college degree.
I wasnt qualified to enroll there because I was a high school drop out and never bothered with a GED.
However my degree was good enough to allow me to serve as an officer in the military.
Go figure.
Why that’s horse hockey.
Gotta quit horsing around
Something similar to this was going on in CA years ago against the hairdressers/hair salons. It was so long ago, I’ve forgotten the details. Lived there at the time and none of it made sense. The people working all were properly licensed but still the state was unhappy about one thing or another regarding their profession; closed them down or fined them...
The president got a huge round of applause at the SOTU address when he mentioned “vocational training” - EXCEPT for the dems sitting on their hands...
I want to know Narezs legal status before I decide
You can lead a commie to water ... but he’ll just crap in it.
California proves yet again that there are limits to human intelligence, but no limits when it comes to human stupidity.
