Oh, that doesn’t, and needn’t, always happen.
As long as the “conservative” vision of Christ isn’t complete, there’s room to challenge it.
The happy thing is that this verse doesn’t live all by its lonesome, but alongside others that promise the perfecting action of the Lord. He’d rather you voluntarily choose than that He must force the issue, but He would rather force the issue than see you lost.
The point is that Hell exists and it is a bad place. Liberal Christians tend to believe that Hell is only figurative and, if it does exist, it is not eternal because God would never do that to anyone.
It’s why Rob Bell finally abandoned the faith. He couldn’t deal with a God that didn’t think like him. I know several liberal Christians and they are really disbelieve parts of the Bible.
