The young and the old tended to survive the 1918 flu. It was those with the healthiest, strongest immune systems who died. Their immune systems attacked the virus in their lungs and caused them to suffocate in their own bodily fluids.
My father survived it at five years old.
He never had flu again for the rest of his life (died at almost 94).
