I just saw "12 Strong" and rather blown away that it was based on a true story. I do vaguely remember hearing about U.S. special forces on horseback in Afghanistan, working with the Northern Alliance and directing airstrikes against the Taliban. But this never seemed to be covered much in the media at the time. I researched some of the facts after the movie and it's pretty much true to what happened. Amazing.

There's a statue of a soldier on horseback at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan commemorating this operation. Must have walked right past it a dozen times.

I'm going back.

Like you, at the time I read an article or two that mentioned special forces on horseback, then nothing more. I didn’t know about the book until the credits rolled in the movie. Now on my reading list.

The bravery of those men is beyond comprehension. They were essentially sent on a suicide mission five weeks after 9/11 and all came home. So few here at home know what our soldiers and warriors do for us every day. Even worse are those that despise those who keep us safe.
