Newton, the most brilliant scientist in history (with the possible exception of Einstein) actually consumed the stuff. He ingested small amounts of mercury on occasion as a taste test to determine the mercury content of substances. Yes, it apparently has a flavor. But as a consequence, it drove him a little crazy (eccentric I think is the proper term) and most likely led to his death. It’s a neurotoxin, basically. Like most things we’re exposed to that’s outside of our natural setting as simple hunter-gatherers, risky.
Mold appears to be the latest neurotoxin, as reported in 2006. I couldn't decide if my peripheral neuropathy (tingling of nerves) was from the element mercury or the metal lead. Mold has been moved to the top of the list, although PN shouldn't affect one's longevity. In my case, CMT is also a player.
There is a “medicine” they used to use in Andrew Jackson’s day (he apparently took it) called “calomel” that was a mercury compound. Shudder
Mad Hatter—once mercury was involved in the production of felt used in hat construction. Exposure to mercury vapors is one route into the body, which leads to deterioration of the nervous system.
