The image might have originated with the Nazis as they first discovered the massacre and invited the Red Cross to come and witness the remains.

A comparable film from about 15 years ago is maybe “Come and See”, made by Belarus, I think.

The Nazis first discovered and publicized Katyn, and I get the problem - that a lot of the original sources are tainted by Nazism - but I still think you should really work to avoid using Nazi propaganda in discussing it. Among other things, it plays right into Russia’s hands. They argue, wrongly, that Kremlin critics and those who bring up Katyn = neo-Nazis.

Lol. A polish media used to claim that explosives had been founded in thw wreckage. It was denied by polish government and the reporters were sacked.
I thought from the very beginning it was the Russians who did it. Don't know if I am right, but that was my guess from day one.

They died because of a disease called get-there-Itis, which causes pilots under pressure to complete the mission, to kill themselves and others. In this case, it was flying into horrible weather, even after trying to cancel the landing, and reportedly being ordered not to.
Most of those killed in the Katyn Forest Massacre were Polish Army Reserve Offices, with about 50+% of them being Jewish.
They would have been the resistance leaders against the Nazis when the regular Polish Army was beaten.
The US Congress had a special investigation of this massacre, several very thick volumes, which laid out much of what happened as there were survivors who escaped and told/wrote about what they saw.
However, I suspect that it is never taught in any US high school history class and probably not in a majority of college European history classes.

I wonder if there is any Pole in existence who sees the poster, reads the inscription (which is in Polish) and his first thought is “oh, oh! Nazi propaganda! Tainted by Nazism!”
