White House Chief of Staff: Trump not expected to extend DACA deadline (Deportation not a priority)
Washington Post ^ | 02/06/2018 | By Erica Werner and Ed O'Keefe

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly said Tuesday that President Trump is not expected to extend a March 5 deadline for when legal protection and work permits begin to expire for young immigrants known as “dreamers” — raising the stakes for lawmakers struggling to reach a solution.

“I doubt very much” Trump would extend the program, Kelly told reporters during an impromptu interview at the U.S. Capitol.

He told reporters that he was “not so sure this president has the authority to extend it” because the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects roughly 690,000 undocumented immigrants was not based on law.

Kelly’s comments come as lawmakers are trying to craft a plan to grant permanent legal protections to dreamers and resolve other aspects of the immigration system. Kelly also said he would recommend against Trump accepting a short-term extension of the program legislative patch.

Trump said in a separate tweet that “We need a 21st century MERIT-BASED immigration system” and added that current family-based legal immigration programs and the diversity visa lottery “are outdated programs that hurt our economic and national security.”

At the Capitol, Kelly reiterated the administration’s position that dreamers “are not a priority for deportation” presuming they avoid breaking the law.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has said previously that her department would not target dreamers for deportation. But Nielsen said in an interview last month with CBS News that DHS will “enforce the law.”

Trump has fedgov arguing before the SCOTUS that 0bola had NO authority to issue the DACA crap.

You don’t see that Trump is trying to compromise A LITTLE BIT with Dem(on)s? Giving them an inch? Have you read the actual details? The DOJ ENDED DACA on Sept 5 - No new registrations - but the ahole judge stopped this.

What do you want Trump to do? What is your plan?

The entire thing DIES DEADER THAN A DOOR NAIL on March 5.

Could you find Kelly’s statement that you refer to, but not from WaPo?

Have you been reading about the ICE raids on workplaces lately, by any chance?

Could you fill me in on the details of how Trump extended DACA 6 months? I’m not precisely sure what you mean.

Actually they havent been workplace raids but inspection visits where employers are given deadlines to produce evidence of legal presence. That is a lot different than the old workplace raids where illegals were taken into custody.

Kelly does not deny making the statement. That is why trump contradicted him the very next day.

Declaring that DREAMers aren't a priority for deportation feels a little bit like executive amnesty, doesn't it?

It's common sense. The deportees should start with people picked up for crimes, then those without any documentation, and lastly the DACA who signed up for temporary work permits. When the latter no longer can get extensions of work permits they will self deport or move to a sanctuary that hires illegals.

Hush now. It is only Amnesty when the Democrats do it. Trump isn't Ike.

Trump always said his priorities were criminals, gangs, dealers/suppliers.

For one thing, the deportation courts are so slow, it makes no sense to clog them with run of the mill illegals when bad guys need to be booted.

Not only that, but he went against his belief that Obama even had the authority to issue a Daca, and did the same thing.

That is incorrect. All existing DACAs are pre-October or recent from when the judge ordered renewals for newly expiring permits. Trump follows judges orders (while appealing them), thus there are now renewals again.

logistics

It's not just logistical. The sanctuary locations, including entire states, will stop the deportations. Cutting off federal funding is not going to change that in the short run.

He didn't extend DACA. He ended renewals until he was forced to start renewing again by a judge. There are 1000's fewer DACAs now. Overturning that judge on appeal and stopping the renewals again will eventually lead to self-deportation.

No, it simply recognizes that there are millions ahead of the REAMERS who should be considered for deportion. If they are keeping their noses clean why should they be treated as MS13 members or cartel coyotes?

Anyone with a functioning brain knows they are at the bottom of the priority list. It also is the chip which will win the important reforms of the immigration system.

It is also recognition of reality and that they are a separate category of Illegal.

We need to go after the drunks, killers and drug cartels who cause enormous damage. Even that will be a herculean job.

I don't care about expiring permits. The fact is that on Jan 2017 he didn't rescind Obama's daca. Then came Sept 2017, he kept the daca recipients here. While here, they killed. One such Trump stay was Daniel De Jesus Rangel-Sherrer, who murdered Diana Martinez-Gonzalez, in October.

He should have long deported, but he wasn't. That's on Obama and Trump. There is no getting away from that. He was 'kept' here.

The fact is there were higher priorities. You have a single example of a DACA killer. But there are 1000's of non-DACA criminals that have been deported. More importantly many illegals have self-deported which is our only solution for the millions of illegals.

The other fact is Trump changed his mind. He likes DACA people now. The sooner you accept that fact and move on, the better.

If ICE agents come across “DACA Illegals”, they should deport them. Period

ICE’s job is to go LOOKING, not wait around for ‘em to fall into their lap; as much is it’s the Pres. job to faithfully EXECUTE the Law (not give an illegally created ‘program’ time to grow-in and fester).

I’ve long since given up on Sessions doing ANYTHING...

Trump extended DACA simply by not immediately putting a halt to the illegal act by 0bama.

What should Trump do? Arrest a bunch of rogue judges? Got any solutions?

I’d advise Trump to simply disregard judges when their rulings are clearly unconstitutional.

If Trump wants to act like a dictator or emperor; yes, he can do that.

But since all his enemies including those in Congress will immediately jump on him if he goes against any laws, what is your next suggestion?
