Do medical marijuana laws reduce addictions and deaths related to pain killers?
Journal of Health Economics Volume 58, March 2018, ^ | David Powell, Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, Mireille Jacobson

Posted on 02/05/2018 3:25:42 PM PST by Ken H

Abstract

Recent work finds that medical marijuana laws reduce the daily doses filled for opioid analgesics among Medicare Part-D and Medicaid enrollees, as well as population-wide opioid overdose deaths. We replicate the result for opioid overdose deaths and explore the potential mechanism.

The key feature of a medical marijuana law that facilitates a reduction in overdose death rates is a relatively liberal allowance for dispensaries. As states have become more stringent in their regulation of dispensaries, the protective value generally has fallen. These findings suggest that broader access to medical marijuana facilitates substitution of marijuana for powerful and addictive opioids.

This paper was supported by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to the RAND Corporation (R01DA032693).

“Haven’t heard from RAND in years. Didn’t know they were still in the business of providing wanted results on demand.”

You think the National Institute on Drug Abuse wanted a result favorable to medical marijuana?

I use medical marijuana. No, I’m not a stoner.

I was on Hydrocodone for pain - I have Sciatica. I was on Trazadone & Temazapam for sleep issues. Those drugs just about ruined my life. The side effects were horrendous!

Pharmas gave me “druggie teeth” and I have to get dentures because my teeth are essentially dead. I was walking in my sleep every night and would wake up feeling tired, drugged and hungover. I had a few falls, which resulted in serious injuries-fractured wrist and disconnected tendon. Broken toes. The falls didn’t “wake me up”, despite the injuries.

I would wake up and find messes. I often woke up to open doors. I had to hide my keys, my hair products, unplug all cooking appliances, etc. every night.

The stories I could tell! LOL Funny, but not funny, because I would have absolutely no memory of any of this.

I would find out what I’d been up to by the messes I’d find when I woke up. I was very careful w/ pain meds and only took it when I absolutely had to. If it was a day off, I’d tough it out. I did not want to get addicted and did not get addicted, despite using it for 6 years.

When we passed legal M, I wanted to try it. I had to get off the toxic and dangerous pharmaceuticals. It is a God send. I don’t get high so I don’t understand why anyone would use it to get a buzz.

I only use it at night to sleep and use Cannabis oil for most of my pain. (I take a milder M dose for severe pain.)

I have my life back now. I’m not up walking in my sleep...at least I don’t think so. I haven’t found any wake up messes. :) My brain is starting to return and my sleep hours are now fairly regular.

Cannabis oil can be purchased legally anywhere, because it contains no THC, which is “the buzz.” It does take away the pain, tho it wears off rapidly. (A simple 1/4 eyedropper full, placed under the tongue.)

I know that there are skeptics out there who think we’re all stoners. That is not the case. When I go to the M shop, I’m surprised how many seniors are there. They also had bad reactions to Big Pharma drugs. Big Pharma drugs are super toxic.

My only complaint is the high cost. The M is expensive. I pay $199 plus a $38 tax for a half G. It is 100% pure, no additives.

Our only problems here are tourists who do not realize that this is not their street dealers marijuana. They use too much and some end up in the hospital. It is potent stuff.

Well now we know why the pharmaceutical industry fights medical marijuana so hard. It’s bad for profits, never mind that it reduces the misery of opioid addiction, because hey, who cares about people?

That doesn’t make sense. Opioids are cheaper than dirt. If Big Pharma is making killer profits, it ain’t on opioids.

Street opioids like heroin are cheap...per dose. For people with chronic pain, it is expensive because it has to be used several times every day.

The Big Pharma opioids are expensive, not cheap. Drug companies are making a fortune for chronic pain meds.

Bull$h!t, prescription opioids are literally pennies a dose. I know, I’ve bought them.

My BIL reduced his consumption of oxycodone by 50% with the use of pot. He was doing about 60mg a day. Now 30.

Chronic back issues, he’s been on meds for about 4 years.

He claims he will continue to taper off until he’s doing just pot and ibuprofen.

The only thing he hates more than the oxy is the pain.

I know that there are skeptics out there who think we’re all stoners. That is not the case.

What the "skeptics" think is utterly irrelevant. What you think—the way you choose to pursue happiness—is what is should matter in America. If you get an improved quality of life from your chosen medicine, then nobody has any right to tell you what to do—as long as you're not infringing on anyone else's rights (and you're not).

I use medical marijuana. No, I’m not a stoner.

Congratulations on finding an alternative to highly addictive pharmaceutical painkillers. I hope you enjoy the highest quality of life possible for yourself. Tyrannical Prohibitionists—who I invite to pound sand—know not what they do...

Congrats to you for finding the medicine that works for you.

I took Trazadone for many years to help with insomnia & it took me 6 months to titrate off it. Thankfully, Trazedone (along with many other meds) was replaced with cannabis. I sleep like a baby now & I’m so thankful .

I’m a MMJ patient here in Florida. I use cannabis to treat depression & anxiety successfully. You’re so right about the expense & here we do not have legal access to flower yet. Still, I thank my Heavenly Father ever day for this wonderful medicine.

Peace be with you & I hope you continue to feel better daily!

“Because it was written by Soros operatives.”

Says the guy who can never ever validate his claims.

Isn’t it funny, Marvin how you can come up with links to all sorts of interesting & accurate articles filled with facts regarding myriad of issues but you can’t ever seem to do so regarding your apparent favorite issue: cannabis.

Go ahead, Marvin. Make another fallacious claim about me or anyone else & Soros. It kinda makes my day, ya know? Same as when I get my dog to roll over :)
