It refers to the color of someone's skin in a derisive way. :-)

I think so too, IMHO it is on the same level as “nigger”. She display her hate and ignorance by using that term to describe her benefactor. OTOH, he, of course, has free rein to do what he will with that term. That is the way these things work.

Personally, I think redneck should be treated the same was as “n*gger”. Only those of that persuasion are allowed to say it. Otherwise, you have to say “r-word”.
