The American Bar Associations top officer has warned the Trump administration and Congress to stay out of the way of the independent counsels probe of the Trump campaign, saying people are trying to use intimidation tactics to derail the investigation.
ABA President Hilarie Bass said the nature of American democracy depends on Mr. Mueller being able to get to the bottom of what happened surrounding the 2016 election.
The United States has a history of using independent investigations to protect the nation against abuses of power. For such investigations to work, they must be allowed to go forward unfettered by threats, intimidation tactics and interference by other branches of government, Ms. Bass said, as the ABA held its 2018 midyear meeting.
She said the questions Mr. Mueller is asking are of critical significance, and said democracy itself depends on allowing him to work independently.
The statement comes as the White House is planning to release a controversial memo drafted by Rep. Devin Nunes, California Republican and chairman of the House intelligence committee.
The memo reportedly details surveillance abuses by the FBI.

It figures she'd be named Hilarie. . .
Well, Ms. Bass, no Independent Counsel is needed for that. Hillary was an unlikable candidate, pushing worn out ideas, with a track record of massive unnecessary death (as in Syria) behind her. As for the Russians, they intended to cause as much disruption as possible, regardless of who won. Obama even said as much, early on. Or don't you believe him now?
In this attempt at disruption, the Russians, with willing dupes in the MSM and Democratic Party, succeeded beyond anything they could have hoped for. However, they may have done us a favor, because the deep state got pulled in, trying to oppose Trump, and in its arrogance was careless, opening cracks being pulled ever wider.
Now, if we want to nail all those who would use our security agencies against us, then quite a number of unbiased and independent (from influence) prosecutors are needed.
‘When the System decides to railroad someone because of political ideologies, that someone should lay down on the tracks and take it.”
