History of the modern assault-style rifle 01:40 (CNN) A Virginia Tech student was arrested Monday after police said he had an assault rifle and was trying to buy 5,000 rounds of ammunition. Yunsong Zhao, 19, has been charged with illegal possession of an assault rifle while not being a US citizen, according to an arrest warrant obtained by CNN affiliate WSLS. Police say Zhao had bought a former police vehicle -- which still had police markings -- and installed a special bumper to the car. The freshman student had also researched bulletproof vests, the document states. Virginia Tech Police Chief Kevin Foust said Zhao was arrested without incident following a "lengthy investigation."

Well, America is a scary place to live w/o proper protection.
Cant own a firearm when not a US citizen?
And here I thought immigrants should have equal rights under the law?
Will the Dems run immediately to correct this outrage?
A democrat caught in a gotcha moment ?
Shocked ! Shocked I tell you ! Their arguments are so solid, and founded in fact !
false fire averted?
I believe legally entered foreigners can buy guns and Ammo. Perhaps a state law!
The dude had a machine gun? Because that’s what an “assault rifle” is - a selective fire fully automatic firearm.
Something is wrong with parts of this story.
People in Virginia who are 18 years of age or older do not “try” to buy ammunition - they either buy ammunition or they do not buy ammunition. There are no legal restrictions on ammo purchases apart from the requirement that one must pay for it.
Firearms purchases, of course, are a different matter. There is no legal way this loser could have purchased a firearm of any kind (”assault rifle” or no) in Virginia.
To me it looks like our laws worked as they should in this case, and the police arrested a person who was illegally in possession of a gun.
I was going to put a “special bumper” on my car, but I figured the cops would think I was a terrorist or something...
Virginia has a law prohibiting the sale of “assault weapons” to non-citizens. Last time I bought an AR15 at a VA gun show, I used my Passport Card to prove citizenship.
Bullsh!t. If that was true, they would allow law abiding persons to carry on campus.
It’s a Virginia law that he can’t have a gun IIRC. He properly stored it in a VT gun locker so I doubt he was planning anything. I thought that Constitutional rights applied to everyone in the US.
It will be an interesting case.
Is 5000 rounds for an assault weapon a lot or normal given target practice, shooting, etc.
Sets up a suit for illegals vs USA? Ends in war camps of illegals (e.g., Islamberg) openly buying mass quantities of arms for their "final solution"?
Whatever happened with the huge stores of weapons allegedly amassed by DHS during the Obama administration?
To the Demoncrats, anything over a single shot .22 cal rifle is an assault rifle and any pistol with a magazine is likewise.
I think it's a lot. Reasonably inexpensive ammo is for .223 is of the order of 40 or 50 cents per round, AFAIK. So he had a couple of thousand bucks worth of ammo.
Also, unless he spends all day at the range, its enough for a few dozen trips.

Correction:
To the Democrats, ANY Firearm (or anything that resembles a Firearm) is an Assault Rifle.
“...had bought a former police vehicle — which still had police markings...”
Seems like a bad practice.
