The US has a history of wiping its feet all over us. Why are we desperate to be Donald's doormat?

Never liked THIS HItchens, the dour, uncharismatic brother of the dynamic Christopher. Nice to know, Peter, that it was America who caused WWII. And here I thought it was Nazis...

Saved their tails in two World Wars ....

Yes, but somehow it's no longer polite to bring that up, and besides, our motives were anything but pure.

There’s a reason why the sunk Lusitania has been offlimits to divers for 103 years - the UK Government doesn’t want them finding the war explosives that it illegally carried and which made it a legitimate target for the German U-Boats under the international rules of war in World War One. The Lusitania was bait, the Brits knew there would be an outcry in the US over the unprovoked murder of US citizens; they were quite content to lose them and a thousand Brits in order to spur support for US entry into a literally crazy war. I have no brief for the German government in WW1, but it wasn’t marginally worse than those of our European allies.

Wiping our feet all over them? You mean like in WWI & WWII? How 'bout the Cold War, where all of Western Europe would have been speaking Russian by now had it not been for the U.S. I've said it before... we should have left Europe to the Nazi's while we developed nukes, and then turned all of Nazi-controlled Europe into a pile of ash.

I wonder just how long it will be before Great Britain again begs US to pull their bacon out of the fire, again? This year? Next year?

I would not paint all British with the same bush over this stupid headline but in the words of Col. Saito:

“I hate the British! You are defeated but you have no shame. You are stubborn but you have no pride. You endure but you have no courage. I hate the British!”

As for the doormat comment, I suppose he thinks it would have been better to have the Germans stomping on their faces?

He’s right. We’ve had thousands of feet all over their island. Most of them shod in combat boots. A lot of them didn’t need those boots when they left.

Sure, we did it for the money so we could rebuild Europe afterwards with more of our money.

You’re welcome.

I'm re-reading "The Gathering Storm" by Winston Churchill and it's still amazing how the politics of 1930s era Great Britain so closely resembled liberal politics here in the USA during the run-up to Donald Trump being elected president.

Basically you have liberals tripping over themselves to pacify dictators that are oppressing their people. When Germany was rebuilding their military in open defiance of the WWI treaties, all the liberals had was "strong words" while behind the scenes they were making deals with them and ceding additional territory (and people) to the dictators while giving doublespeak ("Peace for our Time") to the dumb citizens back home. Meanwhile other countries led by dictators (Italy, Japan) were also emboldened and on the move.

Winston Churchill, a man that was detested by all "respectable and enlightened" Britons was ultimately called upon them to pull their nuts out of the fire. Just like the burden is on the much hated Donald Trump to set things right here in America nearly a century later.

And how they forget, that their ‘British Empire’, destablized Africa, the Middle East and a big chunk of Asia, requiring American blood and money to cleanup their mess.

If at any point either the UK or Germany feel that the USA is too much of a burden then we should relieve them of it and move our bases out of there and place them in Poland. I mean, we can be fair about this. Or is it a case of they hate the US but want our money.

Voting rights were more widespread in Imperial Germany then in Old Blighty!

The biggest PR problem Imperial Germany had was the fact the Kaiser was so unlikeable. He was an immature jerk and prone to make asinine public statements. Oddly enough he was Victoria’s favorite grandchild. I remember reading he was at her bedside when she died.

Yeah, we’ve wiped our feet all over them. Saved their butts in WWII, and numerous times before and since.

"The days when newspapers had that sort of concentrated power to defy authority are coming to an end. The internet, all too easily censored and manipulated, is taking over. Without strong newspapers, all the forces of liberty and law are weaker. Is it nostalgia to wish their decline hadn’t happened?"

What you're longing for, Peter, is honest journalism.

Whether it comes through newspapers, radio, television, or the internet, it is information which informs the public and what's important is truth and honesty.

Today, the "news media" which broadcasts such information is corrupt, dishonest, and politicized and serves willingly as a propaganda machine, in the USA as the propaganda machine for the corrupt and evil Democrat Party.

The internet actually has an ameliorating effect on this propaganda machine, confronting, in its chaos of opinions, the distortions, lies, and groupthink of the political propaganda. Truth seekers welcome such a confrontation and work to protect it as the nefarious seek to destroy it.

Wake up, Peter.

the first made absolutely no sense

Until you discover why America's entry in WWI made perfect sense - that is, for our globalist masters - you won't fully understand what Trump and his patriot supporters are facing in the current conflict.

Hint: both the 16th amendment and federal reserve act were ratified and passed in 1913. Answer: the entirely of US banking, thus savings, capital investment and the stock market where wholly invested in loans to Great Britain & France.

If the Allies had lost to the Germans, the entire Anglo banking system would have been destroyed, taking the US economy down with it. We had no choice but to protect our overseas interests. Why we had overseas interests in the first is the key question.
