Can the simple act of eating a sandwich really be bad for the environment?
New research by British scientists suggests a shocking response: Depends on the sandwich.
Researchers at the University of Manchester Thursday announced the results of what they claim to be "the first ever study looking at the carbon footprint of sandwiches, both home-made and pre-packaged."
Perhaps not surprisingly, the results are bad news for meat-eaters. The study found that sandwiches containing pork meat (that's bacon, ham and sausage), cheese and prawns contained the highest carbon footprints.
The worst of the lot, the so-called "all-day breakfast" sandwich containing egg, bacon and sausage, created the same carbon dioxide emissions as driving a car 12 miles.
The study took into account the environmental impact of raising various sandwich ingredients, processing them, transporting them, packaging them and refrigerating them before purchase and consumption.
In their conclusion, the researchers recommend reducing the amount of cheese and meat in sandwiches, extending sell-by and use-by dates, and making sandwiches at home if at all possible.

We, the unwashed masses, are carbon offsets for the Elitist Ruling Class. “Don’t eat meat or drive a car so I can fly about in my private jet and heat & cool my mansion.”
Pulled pork sammitches, smothered in JimmyJay’s BBQ sauce....I’m in Hawg heaven.
I am frying bacon and sausage right now. Come and get me!
Yes, it’s a total lie.
But the “farce” with this one is strong. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!
Nobody is this insane, someone must have paid him to write this crap.
My wife is from North Carolina. One of her relatives owned Rooster Jr.’s Bar B Que. Every year when we go to Wilmington and stay at Wrightsville beach we go to Smithfields there, they make the best pulled pork sandwiches. (some of the local mom/pop shops might do a wee bit better)
I still prefer Lockhart (Blacks, Kreitz & Smith’s) link beef sausage. You don’t have to ask “where’s the beef”, you can smell it. (we make a carbon copy of that sausage, have a processing facility at our house at the farm. Have not done it in quite a while though)
We are slowly remodeling that house and plan to move back there.
I can see 50 years from now where they will regulate everything you eat and the amount per day. I want so badly to think America will not get into this craziness that Europe seems to be going, but my hope isn’t strong for that. Trump is just slowing it down because it seems people in America are completely stupid and will put up with crap like this to save the planet....knowing it will do no such thing. Earth compared to the Sun is a mini dot and Earth compared to the rest of the universe is even smaller. Thank God I will hopefully be checked out before real damage can be done.
ROTFL! Talk about wasting “other people’s money”. Prawns? What do these “scientists” have against shrimp anyway? Put them on treadmills and then badmouth them.
Knew you would be here.
Global Elites — sandwiches for me but not for thee.
Yes, they’ll tell us all human activity causes global warming, and it must be controlled, even eliminated to save the world. This is what these aholes are really after. Paying more taxes for it is like paying for our own demise.
My local TV station here in Maine...twice, on two different days....aired a story from the University of California Davis showing some moonbats who claimed that eating a hamburger is like driving a car 12 miles.
I went to Burger King yesterday and ordered a Whopper as I went through the drive-thru. I was happy to do my part.
Outlaw all food - anything ingested/digested has the potential to produce methane......
This is ludicrous, and sounds more like the type of “research” most often practiced by sociologists and their ilk, where evidence is gathered (i.e. cherry-picked) to support a predetermined conclusion, rather than gathering data in an unbiased manner in order to analyze it to come up with a conclusion.
Every bit of food produced is composed of carbon dioxide. Our bodies are composed of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is literally the stuff of life. Hysteria about carbon dioxide amounts to hysteria about living matter. They might as well get hysterical and overwrought about the presence of water (another essential component of all living things) on earth.
Baloney!
How did humans survive for 200,000 years or more without these experts to tell them how to eat and wipe?
not enough bacon on that
Next thing they’ll do, is blame all the chickens for laying so many eggs for every food. Oh’ yes, don’t forget the cows for the milk. Oh yes and blame the Yank Breakfast Cereal makers.
Caco ergo sum. Limey ponces.
Trump is slowing down the inevitable. I think America is too large to be in its current state. States like California and New England should secede. Then the remaining states will survive without the leftist parasite infection.
I enjoy reading about wacko leftists saying stupid things. I suggest to this idiot that he/she/it go jump into a ditch and pull the dirt over him/her/it.
