Immigration Hand-Biters and Bad Politics
The Spectator ^ | 26 January 2018 | Scott McKay

Thursday, lots of conservatives for whom a harder line on immigration is a fundamental issue devolved into arrhythmia upon news that President Trump offered to place as many as 1.8 million Dreamers, or illegal aliens brought to the United States as children by their parents, on a path to citizenship. . . snip

But those who despair of Trump’s generosity to the other side can relax. As of Thursday night, at least, there is no danger of this deal becoming reality. Why? Because the offer drives a major wedge between the Democrats and their base, and that party simply cannot repudiate its Hard Left donors and activists.

A bit of a long read, but, worth the effort. This article gives a lot of "food for thought" on this opening gambit.

As I have said before, I am very impressed by how fast Team Trump has learned to play the Washington games.

I think we need to focus on how this will be playing out as we move toward November. I believer that It is going to be very interesting how this develops and plays out.

I’ll bet the DACA deal offers citizenship to only the hardest workers, and the will grow to hate taxes. I’m all for giving them citizenship ...

Hard to screw a happy face onto this. The Reagan amnesty worked out real well. So well California is a foreign country. My head was supposed to spin and it is not spinning. Head firmly not rotating. The numbers are just so bad, we needed deportations. Mass deportations. So many of them here now, and so many of their kids growing up. Millions here, millions there. It adds up. That’s sarcasm. President Trump is a good guy but we needed an Atila the Hun at this state in our history. I won’t say the final nail is in the coffin, I’ll say the coffin is in the ground, dirt has been packed down, and a bunch of Mexicans are pouring the concrete over it. They’re doing a really crappy job too.

This is his first offer????

-Amnesty for 1.8 million. Not 700,000.

-4 million on chain migration waiting list still get to come to US.

-50,000 annual from diversity lottery just changed to a different category.

-No national E-verify.

-No end to anchor baby citizenship.

With this proposal, there will be no meaningful reduction in annual immigration from 3rd world countries for 10 years. Which means, AS WE’VE SEEN BEFORE, there will be no meaningful reduction in immigration from 3rd world countries ever. At all.

Yup.

Lousy going in position.

The Screamers (not Dreamers) amnesty should have been for 300,000 and only if they go through a citizen review process where the communities they live in get a chance to decide if they want them around.

And the end to birthright citizenship for the children of illegals has disappeared off the radar, but it should be No. 1 on the hit list. Once that’s in place, the magnet gets turned off.

Note that the Leftists are screaming bloody murder about this deal, which proves that there’s no negotiating with them. It really gives them far, far more then they should get and yet they scream. And the reason they do that is: they smell weakness so they go for the throat.

Got the concern trolls in a lather - they haven’t the ability to grasp what Trump did to Schumer and the Dems by including this ‘deal” that they cannot accept and stay viable with their base - their best hope (ironic as it seems) is for McConnell to go “nuclear” so they can tell their base it was all the eeeeeevill Republicans....

Why not make an initial offer that is much more strict. Then when the left rejects it, Trump can compromise his position, three or four times even, before he gets to this ridiculous capitulation. Then he can say:

“We’ve compromised 4 times already. They haven’t moved an inch. They clearly want open borders and couldn’t care less if the American working class is destroyed as a result.”

Concern troll? You bet your ass I’m concerned. We’ve been screwed on this issue so many times before by people just like you who say it’s all gonna work out fine. No more.

Like I said - many haven't the ability to understand the jam Trump put Schumer and the Dems in by the way he crafted this framework (that's all it is - something to supposedly give the sides something to start with as far as bargaining and he knows two things - Schumer can't accept it; and the Repubs also have much more leverage because of it)...knowing and understanding the enemy, so you can leverage him against himself, can be a most useful thing and trump is a Master at it.

Schumer made his "It's like negotiating with a bowl of Jello" shot and now he's the King of the Jello Bowl and in a no-win situation.

Trump’s offer is grossly unacceptable. A final resolution needs to be restricted to the original 700k and it needs to include an end to birth right citizenship, national e-verify, and an IMMEDIATE end to chain migration. Not an end to it in 10 years.

So you’re telling me that Trump is going to get that better deal by signalling his complete willingness to accept much, much less than that from the very start? Talk about an inability to understand!!

This problem needs to be solved. It is not a political beach ball that the sides just get to keep bouncing back and forth to gain leverage. This is a real life problem and it needs a real life solution. You want to play games. I want to solve the problem.

If this holds true I’ll sit out the next national election.
Seems the Goldman Sachs crowd is getting their amnesty.

A story on Drudge last week noted that more Anchor Babies were born last year than Citizen births. No society can survive this, the country may survive but the Culture won't and that is the real goal.

Must be tough to be ‘mind like a steel trap’ Trump, with the Turtle as the leader of the Senate. McConnell should be coached before every appearance before the Media. He knows not the brilliance of the Trump ‘negotiations’ and should shut up until he is told what to say and how to react. Mitch would give away the whole farm, if he had a weaker President in place.

You are totally missing the point - Trump’s “deal” is not intended as a deal - it’s intended to show everyone that the Dems are unwilling to deal.

I’m not missing anything.

Trump could just as easily achieve your ridiculous “point” by putting out a proper proposal, one that actually works for the American people. Since the dems are going to reject anything he suggests anyway (i.e., be “unwilling to deal”), it’s beyond stupid for him to lock himself into a total capitulation for the purpose of futile political gamesmanship.

If all he’s doing is trying to make “a point”, which is extremely difficult since MSM messaging will not co-operate with him making “a point”, he should demand the sky! Gets the same result-dems reject. Instead, he gives away the farm while saying hello.

You think in any future negotiation he can now drive a harder bargain than what he’s now proposing in his own plan? If so, you’re not only “missing the point”, you’re freakin delusional.

You want to play games. Rah! Rah! Rah! Have fun. Play your little games. I’ll hang with the serious people who actually want to solve this problem before the final remnants of the American working class are wiped out forever.
