Ontario's New Driving Laws Will Mean Automatic Suspension Of Driver's Licences For Distracted Driving
Tougher road rules are coming this 2018.
Ontario is implementing new driving rules that will mean automatic suspension of drivers licences for convicted distracted drivers.
Constable Clint Stibbe of the Toronto police went on 680 NEWS on Monday and confirmed this, saying the law has been passed and that its now just a matter of time.
Moving forward, distracted drivers will receive a licence suspension as well as a substantial fine. The suspension period and fine amount will vary depending on the number of subsequent offences:
First offence: 3 days suspension and $1,000 fine Second offence: 7 days suspension and $2,000 fine Three or more offences: 30 days suspension, $3,000 fine and six demerit points
Officers will not be allowed to seize drivers licences at roadside. Only under a judges approval and after the driver is found guilty will the drivers licence be suspended.
The tougher laws will come into effect sometime in the next few months. They were created in attempt to reduce the amount of distracted driving, which accounted for 7,435 crashes in Toronto in 2016.
I’m sure this law will be enforced against government officials just as energetically as it will against private citizens.
No mention os oogling the blond on the corner!!!
I think the 1st offense for distorted(cell and text use) should be 500.00
2nd should be 3 month suspend.
3rd 1 year
If your that stupid, 4th Jail
If some business type can make a grand with one business call whats a 100 dollar fine, nothing. Go for the jugular
distorted = distracted
Distorted FR use dont count
Needless to say,I didn't go 50kph over the limit. Not even 10 for that matter.
Government’s first move to force driverless cars on the public, LOL, although the Premier is nuts don’t you know
A few years ago I held a young boys head wound closed while someone else helped mom until EMTs arrived after some woman forced her into a concrete construction barrier while texting. I saw the whole thing happen. The driver was oblivious and didn’t stop. Nobody is going to get much sympathy for getting a ticket from me.
Have to admit, I see WAY too much stupidity with cell phones on my drive home.
The typical offender is female, and driving a very expensive vehicle.
Ontario (and the Provincial Police therein) have always been a bunch of tight-asses. I grew up in Port Huron and had to deal with them once in awhile.

The ignorance in this thread is appalling. While I agree as a Conservative that more laws do not a safer city make, I also believe that driving is a behavior problem, analogous to drug use. War on Drugs is apropos to this discussion.
In this society, licensed & insured drivers are a must, as are driving laws. However, something is being missed in the grand scheme, as our roads should be getting safer, not more dangerous. Thus, this is a behavior problem. Though I have conflict with the notion of being “licensed” to drive, I recognize that the road is safer with a gaggle of licensed drivers. Much as I feel safer in a field of gun owners than a roomful of gun “shoppers” or novices.
I know more than I’m writing here, but suffice to state that coddling of pot smokers & drunk drivers, in addition to abolishing driver education in most schools, has created a toxic atmosphere when combined with the lackadaisical attitudes of many of the younger generation.
It should be harder to get a license and very easy to lose both it and the car. That would change behavior and make for fewer tragic incidents which you described.
I hate taking this hard line, but I teach driver safety and we had a client hit by an idiot who passed on a double yellow in a curve at nearly 100mph head-on - over 140mph combined speed - taking her 7 y/o son from her.
If vehicle owners choose to endanger the lives of me & my family and others, there must be penalties precluding the inevitable statistic of injury or loss of life.
Key word: Choice.
I view this as no different than guns: Be safe or don’t own them.
It’s stupid simple:
Drive safely - which translates also as lawfully - or DON’T DRIVE on public roadways.
Very well put and I agree 100%, especially about training. I don’t know if you ride, but the MSF courses are to me a very good model of training. Technique and situational awareness are heavily emphasized. I am approaching 300K accident free miles on two wheels. I doubt I would have without this training. It has been equally valuable on four.
I haven’t ridden since a wreck at the age of 20. No reason other than I adopted 4 wheels out of practicality and lived in a hostile environment to two wheel motoring.
I truly hope your good fortune continues.
Yep...all my close calls lately have been females texting...infuriates me to no end.
