A quick look at the map during the Cold War will make it clear why Greece and Turkey both were invited into the alliance in 1952, and kept there despite episodes from both countries of behaving badly. In the face of the serious threats of Soviet subversion and expansionism, the Cypress issue was news but a back burner priority.

The Turks fought bravely in the Korean War, as also the Afghanis. Kurds trusted the U.S. in Iraqi War I, and were left swinging in the wind when Saddam retained power. Kurds have better asymmetric defenses than Turkish tanks can handle, so expect this to involve Russian, Syrian, U.S. troops soon. Wonder where Israeli DF will be.
