I am hoping that Tillerson is either making a dumb statement or Trump is going to oppose this nonsense.
On NPR this morning they were trying to make the case that it “may” violate international law. What was funny was that I had to turn it off because they said “may” just one time too many. It literally sounded of desperation.

This is what I agrued we should have done with IRAQ. That is, do the same thing there we did in Germany and Japan after WWII. The region would have been substantially more stable.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I’d prefer that announcements about the military be made by SECDEF. If something involves both the State Department and the Department of Defense, both SECDEF and the SOS should be present to make the initial announcement. The State Department has risen to way too much dominance in the hierarchy of government administration, in my opinion, and mistakes caused by its arrogance and bureaucracy have been the cause of way too many problems around the world and at home.
Do you know how many troops do we have in Syria?
No, a new nation is being established east of the euphrates. The territory includes that formerly Iraq and Syria.
Strictly speaking, there will be no Troops in Syria
Why? Let them kill each other.
Dear Mr. Secretary,
0bama messed up for sure, but it was George W. Bush who opened that can of worms. And on false pretenses to boot.
And speaking of Condi, did we ever find out why she was asleep at the wheel as National Security Advisor?
It is not President Trump’s goal to oust Assad. His goal is to kill all ISIS and others of that ilk. By leaving we may open the door for them to rebound.
We have 12 bases within Syrian borders, get them out NOW. President Trump, you vowed to not engage in the same activity as Obama and GW. No more nation building, Syria is just fine the way it is and is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. We took Libya from a stable country, to one that is filled with ISIS and AlKayda. The weapons were looted and moved into the wars in Iraq and Syria. In fact, ISIS is USUS. We partnered with moderates, who immediately after being trained by our CIA put on the black outfit and went after Assad.
This is a good idea, I repeat this is a good idea!! The only problem here may be international law (I’m sure Assad does not want us there). As long as our troops are not dying (as they are not) what does it matter if we station troops in Iraq and Syria? We need to keep a lid on the crazies and this is the way to help stabilize the region. No more ISIS or it’s next generation.
As an aside, if international pressure (it may be unlawful) forces us to get out, we need to keep troops in the area such as Iraq and Kuwait to be a rapid response force to meet potential issues rising. At any rate, we need to stay there to continue to help our only real allies in Syria, the Kurds.
The best way to not fight the next war there is to keep a sizable amount of troops there with the ability to go on the offense rapidly.
We elected Trump to defeat ISIS. Not to remove Assad from power in Syria or occupy Syria. He promised the opposite on that score.

The idea that withdrawing American troops from Iraq created ISIS is an absurd, Orwellian lie. What created ISIS was the CIA funneling billions of dollars of weapons to Syria. After the Syrian government lost control of large parts of the country to the “FSA,” ISIS revealed itself and numerous local FSA groups pledged allegiance to ISIS and brought their CIA weapons with them.
The neocons who advocated arming terrorists in Syria are trying to push this false narrative.
