When I was reduced to riding the city buses because of a drastic change in economic circumstances, I met a bus driver who had been in the navy and had had occasion to anchor off Nairobi, Kenya, sometime in the ‘80’s. He said that even two miles out to sea, the stench was overpowering. He also commented that once the crew got topside and got a whiff, NO ONE wanted Liberty to explore, examine and/or shop!
I thought that odd when he was relating it, but now, I have a better appreciation for his story telling ability. I’m sure he was trying to “protect my sensibilities!”
An online friend of long, uh, acquaintance, told me about a woman he knew who’d gone into the Peace Corps and was sent to S Korea. Agricultural and animal husbandry practices are both different and more primitive than they are here, and she didn’t grow up in the rural US in the first place. First few times she used the outhouse all went well — but then she got “snouted” — the outhouse emptied right out into the hog yard — and she was on a plane home right after that.
