As far as the statistics, I think the authors are actually just speculating without any scientific basis.

Pretty much this. As a straight young guy sowing my wild oats as a twenty something in San Francisco I had gay guys offering me BJs all the time in bar and gym bathrooms. No thanks. But I’m sure a lot of drunk, horny and female companion less guys do accept those invitations. The gay guys wouldn’t be so aggressive if their propositions didn’t work, IMO.
