Maybe restaurants should follow the Australian model ( or McDonalds). When you arrive at a restaurant you go to the counter and place your order, pay for it,then go find a table. Waiters will bring your food but you bus your own table. There are also no refills on beverages.
I do find that the younger generation absolutely loves to eat out. Spent 2 months with my daughter and her family and she only cooked about 4 or 5 times. Lunch was always leftovers from previous nights dining out.
Regarding the Australian Model . . .
I occasion a southern bbq restaurant with several locations. It uses this model, except they will come by to ask how you are enjoying the food, ask if you need anything else, will bus the table, and after you leave will finish cleaning the table, wiping it spotlessly clean. The manager also walks around (is engaged / present) and may welcome you on the way in or thank you on the way out. Never engaged an employee with a bad attitude - all very positive. But they are not in your face / making a pest of themselves. Food is above average. And they also have a drive through in case you cannot come on in to sit down.
Honestly, since Obama took over I’ve gradually stopped eating out. I’ll eat the food but almost always take out. I don’t want to be around the people.
