The words “accountability” and “government bureaucrat” are strangers to each other for many of the almost 22 million people who work for governments in the United States. Imagine having a job where you can totally screw-up and seriously inconvenience a million people, and not only remain unpunished, but not even be identified to the people you scared the wits out of.
That is the privilege being enjoyed by the person (a male, apparently, based on the gender pronouns employed) who told Hawaiians that a missile strike was incoming last Satrurday at 8 a.m. John Fund writes in National Review:
[A]pparently, no one is resigning, and the staffer in question is merely being “counseled” and retrained so he doesn’t do it again. According to state officials, the staffer answered “yes” when asked by the system if he was sure he wanted to send the message. He wasn’t even aware of his mistake until mobile phones near him began displaying the alert.
This guy feels bad, right. He’s not doing this on purpose. It was a mistake on his part and he feels terrible about it,” explained Hawaii EMA administrator Vern Miyagi, a former Army major general. But Miyagi declined to say that the staffer would face any disciplinary actions. Richard Rapoza, the official spokesman for EMA, declined to identify the errant employee and added, “At this point, our major concern is to make sure we do what we need to do to reassure the public. This is not a time for pointing fingers.”
I can’t speak for the people of Hawaii, who have always impressed me as rather laid-back, but I am not reassured that no serious consequences follow

What I find more alarming is the current state of preparedness of the government and citizens of Hawaii, IF the news reports of their actions and behaviors in response to the accidental alert (and its a big if) are accurate. You live in Hawaii and have known for quite some time NK can launch something in your direction, but you have no clue what to do if it happens?
the button pusher had better stay out of small aircraft flying off the coastline. IRRC the birther lady died in a aircraft accident.
Being a democrat bureaucrat means never having to say you’re sorry...
Well the prevailing advice is kiss your hiney goodbye.
Yeah no one is responsible for anything in lib world.....except Trump.....
Forget NK. US military presence has made it a prime target for maybe 80 years, and helter-skelter panic is their response to an alarm?
I think that really was their plan:
Ive heard speculation that the false alarm was a deliberate attempt to provoke Trump into pushing his big button and thereby start a nuclear war so he could then be impeached.
Hey, it would make perfect sense to a liberal!
The world is going to Hell in a hand basket.
I was reading Qanon this morning. Claims of a huge false flag this week...
Yet another government “worker” who is incompetent...and allowed to remain anonymous...and continue their incompetence.
To be fair, Trump does not live in a lib world...
Yup. Buckle up.
Ha, yes, quite true.
My guess is that the person managing the drill is probably more at fault.
If the person running the drill did not inform the new shift personnel, they are going to react as trained. If the person making the call did not start his message with, “ this is a drill” The person activating the even would activate the event. Much like missiliers, they are trained to act.
This is not a federal issue. This is a “stupid” issue.
Hawaii is just one big ol’ participation trophy as long as you’re not white and heterosexual.
.
1) I didn't mean to do it
2) I didn't realize I did it
3) I feels bad about it
4) it's society's fault
Ok. Don't worry about it. All you need is a little counseling.
What? Is he a muslim?
