They may have abandoned the positions King took in his day, but they certainly haven't abandoned King. In addition to remaining a potent symbol for them, their current "reverse" racialism is doubtless exactly where King himself would be were he alive today.

Also note that despite the claims of his conservative apologists (including some in his own family), King was a typical religious liberal who rejected the actual supernatural doctrines of his supposed religion and considered religion to be mere didactic mythology to be used to promote secular "ethics."
