Today, GM unveiled the first image of its upcoming autonomous fourth-generation Bolt EV-based vehicle – the “first without a steering wheel or pedal.”
The automaker also says that it filed a petition asking the DOT permission to deploy the vehicle as soon as next year.
The move represents an accelerated self-driving timeline for the company, which could potentially leapfrog most other companies working on the technology since the most common timeline is a commercial launch in 2020-2022.
The vehicle would represent the next generation of Cruise AV autonomous car based on the Bolt EV.
In June, GM announced the completion of the first batch of 130 Chevy Bolt EV autonomous prototypes at its Orion Assembly Plant located in Orion Township, Michigan...They are already using part of their fleet to carry Cruise employees “anywhere in San Francisco using their app” – an early version of the service they plan to offer to the public someday.
Although GM claims to be the 1st without a steering wheel or pedal, Google has demonstrated pedal-less, steeringwheel-less autonomous vehicles first as part of its Google X labs in 2014 and now part of its Waymo spinoff. Google has since added back steering wheels to its own vehicles and *steered* the organization to more as add-ons to existing vehicles, especially Lexus crossovers and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids.
A few months later, they claimed to be ready to “mass produce” self-driving Chevy Bolt EVs and they announced an expansion of the test fleet to New York...In order to plead their case for the safety of their vehicle and submit their petition for the permission to deploy the vehicle, GM released a new “2018 Self-Driving Safety Report”.
The report explains the various passive and active safety features of the vehicle as well as all the redundant hardware.
I still want to know how car insurance will work.
Now- the driver & their individual record & habits are charged accordingly. How will these cars be rated?
Who do I sue if there is an accident?
How does the car know I have to get off the highway & take a leak??? OR get food? Or Whatever. ??
IF you need to pass a slower vehicle, you sometimes exceed the speed limit, but you go back to the correct speed limit quickly.
If this car won’t let you speed, a slow vehicle will be the pace setter for a very long line of vehicles.

I have driven over a million miles since I got my driver’s license at 16 & I can still function well enough to keep doing so.

Self driving cars without steering wheels and pedals..what would go wrong? Computer software could be hacked...no thanks.
On the contrary.
The rich can afford chauffeurs. Autonomous automobiles will let the hoi polloi (i.e the rest of us) enjoy the same luxury.
I enjoy driving — most of the time. However, i would love to have an AI drive me through congested urban traffic, while I sat back and did just about anything else. If I acquire some driving restrictions, as I get older; then robocars would become essential. They will be far more: comfortable, convenient, and safe than mass transit, or other options available to the non-rich senior.
Actually, all of those conditions and obstacles, have been accounted for in the design and testing.
In the future, 20-30 years from today, none of those events will occur. For example, no traffic cops will be necessary, and no bank robberies.
For certain this vehicle will be attractive to retirement communities and such. This will offer older folks a little more freedom per se. Seniors also have a lot of money to afford these.
If the car is autonomous, there won’t be a need for the cops to pull the vehicle over, and there won’t be traffic cops either. Autonomous vehicles will be “managing” the roads on their own, and will also do their own recognition of other vehicles and obstacles, and will keep detailed records of trips.
Idiocracy on parade. This has zero to do with “self driving cars” and everything to do with absolute control of the population
It’s not a GM thing. All car makers are working on their own driverless vehicles.

These kinds of looney products need to be prohibited immediately!
They can only degrade an already bad situation with sleepy drivers. All we need is a whole fleet of automatic road boulders!
