Two nights ago the alarm in my house went off at 4:50 A.M. It woke my wife and I out of a sound sleep and our kids came running into our room. After nervously fumbling with my safe I extracted my firearm while the wife called the police.

I maintained the high ground at the top of the steps after clearing the landing around the corner. I also noted the front door was open and there was some sort of tracks on the landing. I knew there were tracks because we had a fresh dusting of snow that night.

Once I settled my breathing and calmed a bit I had this horrid thought. If I had to shoot someone, that meant jail for certain. Even though I had retreated into the furthest spot possible it meant jail. Luckily, I didn’t have to make that choice as the would be robber did not enter and fled the scene.

I live in a blue state and that is now the reality of it. The state gives the criminals the benefit of the doubt. It will never be said out loud but the state regards us “rich” people (anyone who isn’t on welfare) as getting what we deserve when our houses get robbed. If our families get hurt? Well, that is seen as cosmic justice too.
