Ok, who lived in South Florida in the 80s, and remembers the ad, I think it was for Sound Advice, with the haughty salesman going, "Really sir, that's a multiplex demodulator!"

I do!

Do you remember Luskin's? They were an East Coast electronics chain that would have HUGE clearance sales where they would unload last year's models for super cheap.

I worked for Radio Shack at the time and Luskin's was just up the road. People would buy their receivers and speakers there and come to us for the cables. Was always amazed at how cheap their stuff was.

More than 1/2 the times I’ve gone to Best Buy they don’t have what I need in stock. Standard reply from the sales clerk is “oh, you can order that off the internet.”

True.

The people at Best Buy say folks come in to see the item in person .... then go home and buy it online.

You’re right. This was a purchase last week. I just checked my order and I DID pay CA Sales Tax.

I just checked my Amazon orders back to August 2017 and about 20% to 25% don’t have any tax collected on them. I think it’s because those merchants do not have a physical presence in California.

I remember when the tax collection was being introduced around 2011 when I bought my plasma TV. I bought it on line before the new tax collection started.

I buy my photo gear from B&H - they are based in NY state and do not have any physical presence in CA, so they don’t charge tax, either.

Looks like I need to find better methods to make sure CA doesn’t get my tax dollar!

My sis had a steel pole hammock stand arrive at her house in her name but she never ordered it and offered to send it back. Amazon told her to keep it.

She’s got a nice hammock in the backyard now.

Rush used to play the Spatula City bit on his show back in the early days. Took me 20+ years to find out it was from the UHF movie.

I was just missing CC the other day when searching for a small part for an electronic device.

Recently (last 8 or so years), I’ve been getting my electronics and computer needs from Office Depot and sometimes Staples.

Try Microcenter. I put my PC together from there.

If people bothered to shop around, the Amazon hype would end.

True. Most people don't know Best Buy will match Amazon's price at the register. Clerk can do it on their own, no waiting for a manager for "special approval"... it just happens.

Yup. Special player, DVD-knockoff design that destroyed the disc before a half-dozen viewings. Sort of the equivalent of “streaming” when necessary bandwidth wasn’t available: buy disc cheap, watch a few times, throw away.

Rush’s spoof ads were glorious back then. Nice to know where Spatula City came from. Any idea about Barnacle Brothers?

Yes I do! I think there were actually two levels of batteries below alkaline...Heavy Duty, and General Purpose...the General Purpose ones had to be really bad.

Thanks, but I’ll continue to eschew malls full of ‘teens,’

I don't shop for electronics at malls. And wherever I go for electronics or anything else, I hardly ever encounter teens or mobs of people that hinder my shopping experience.

..the chance my car will get plowed into getting there,

There again, you are having tough luck, because, I haven't had that kind of trouble getting to wherever I want to shop for anything.

and finding out what I want is not even stocked. Once again, you need to be clear about what you are shopping for, and trying to determine if it's available before you get to the place.

Amazon isn’t hype. They perform as advertised. Performance is one thing, finding what you want at a lower price is something different. I haven't found anything at Amazon that I can't find at lower prices elsewhere, and if I can find it at Walmart or Target, I can get free delivery too. So, it seems that Amazon is getting "out-Amazoned" by the competition.

But it is hard to beat the convenience of Amazon and the instant gratification.

For those who can't get out, delivery to the home is a very big convenience. But when the prices at local competition makes it worthwhile to get out, then, the Amazon "convenience" becomes a moot point. And, I do take into consideration the prices plus delivery charge, and fuel usage. I haven't been able to justify shopping at Amazon yet.

Prime gets free delivery ... I got hooked when I could not find the original vendor for a piece of heavy equipment which would have ordinarily made the purchase a no go.

Then just recently I was looking at leaf blowers and the price Amazon charged was much less (with free delivery) than the store I would have had to drive to for that particular brand plus time and gas. So far I have more than saved on items (albeit heavy ones) than the cost of Amazon Prime not counting time and gas.

For books there simply isn’t any competition. And they will buy back certain books even DVDs.

A few months ago, I was shopping for a an edger. I checked with several stores, including their online offerings. Amazon ended up being the most expensive out of the ones that I considered. Even with delivery, Amazon could not beat the deal I got from Lowe’s, and Lowe’s is hardly ever a a discounter. Plus, when it comes to instant gratification, I was able to get it instantly and about 8 minutes from my house.

Believe me, I do shop for the better prices, and will get it from whoever offers the best price, as long as it’s the same quality that I’m looking for.
