In a significant victory for neighborhood and park advocacy groups, the Obama Foundation announced on Monday that a controversial proposed above-ground garage on the Midway Plaisance will be located under the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park.
The foundation move to bury the garage in the complex comes as opposition to aspects of the development on historic park land is getting more organized – and as crucial city and federal approvals are needed.
That’s coming as a federal review to discover “adverse effects” of the project is ongoing and may well prove tougher than expected because the federal players are not controlled by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former President Barack Obama’s first chief of staff.
The Midway connects Washington and Jackson parks with the South Side system designed by the famed landscape architects Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. They are listed on the federal National Register of Historic Places.

A Pimple on the butt of Chicago
I was in Chicago last week talking to a man whom I would have expected to be a strong Obama supporter, and he was opposed to this project. His contention was that it will consume a huge amount of the parkland and offer very little to the community in return.
He felt quite strongly about it.
What does this project do for the people of Chicago?
Bring in a lot of Kenyan tourists ?
Alas, yes. The people working on Reagan’s library wanted to build it in the beautiful Atherton/ Portola Valley Area on the San Francisco peninsula. The kooks hounded the project to death. That’s why it’s in Simi Valley.
And Chicago is a pimple on the butt of the USA.
Perhaps they could move a few blocks West to Lawndale.
Build it tall enough and you will have a nice view of the lake from there.
A few hundred families of Obamas people should be happy to give up their homes.
And find a different architect.
Can they get the team that designed the famous”HOTEL OF DOOM”. They could do it in black.
Cars at the Obama Library!!! What about the environment? No high speed rail!?

One thing I know is that it will make the yuppies in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhoods very happy. Hyde Park is where the University of Chicago is and the yuppies there are still in love with Obama. Kenwood is just to the north of Hyde Park and some University staff live there too. It’s also where Obama has his own residence.
The largely white and affluent residents surrounding the University of Chicago is in stark contrast to the mostly black inner city neighborhoods that exist further in all 3 directions. The fourth direction, being Lake Michigan.
The prosperity surrounding the University of Chicago campus dates back to a more genteel age when Hyde Park, Kenwood, and the South Shore neighborhoods were represented by Republicans. This was decades earlier when even many Jewish residents voted GOP.
The decline and fall of the vicinity correlates with Democratic dominance in Chicago.

Much like Alfred Nobel establish the Nobel Peace Prize while earning his wealth perfecting explosives.
They will have a wonderful smug-fest of a day when the library opens, with speeches and balloons, and maybe their hero will even come back from California for the day.
But they will be dealing with the traffic, the ugly, and driving thirty minutes out of their way to find a soccer field for the rest of their lives.
