If he had had any symptoms of it at all in 1988 then by 1994 there would have been no need for an official diagnoses. He would have been so far gone that a child could have diagnosed it at that point.
Yep ever been around it that is correct
I think you're right. I'm reading on healthine that early phase is only 2-4 years, so if he was mid-phase by 1994 (which is when most people seem to be diagnosed -- mid-phase) it would have probably started no earlier than 1990, and more likely later than that, given he had access to excellent medical care.
With my experience, if I had to guess, neither he nor his wife nor aides had any clue in 1988 that he would soon have Alzheimers. My parents, 5 years before each of their diagnoses, traveled the world, built a dream house, and engaged in hobbies and rich social lives. If either had a senior moment, it would not be anything a young person wouldnt also sometimes have.
Again, my guess based on my experience, two years before his dx, he probably was noticing a problem keeping track of things. Maybe at some point his family was noticing it too. Maybe they even got a dx or possible dx earlier, and hoped that some treatment, some rest, whatever, would get thins back to normal. His letter to us was when they realized he was on the path of no return.
I’ll never forget President Reagan’s speech at the 1992 GOP convention, nearly four years after leaving office and two years before his 1994 diagnosis. He died a decade after that.

the damage from Alzheimers can start years before anyone one notices the los of cognitive function. I personally think that the last 1-2 years of Regan’s Presidency there was a noticeable impact on him intellectually but that being said he was intellectually functioning better then most politicians on capital hill. it is sad to me that Regan will always have Liberals pouncing on this to claim he was not Great president.
