Before we wax too eloquent about the democratic aspirations of the great Iranian people, we should keep in the mind that the most probable scenario for Iran under any likely regime is a sickening spiral into poverty and depopulation. Iran has the fastest-aging population of any country in the world, indeed, the fast-aging population of any country in history. It has the highest rate of venereal disease infection and the highest rate of infertility of any country in the world. It has a youth unemployment rate of 35% (adjusted for warehousing young people in state-run diploma mills). And worst of all, it has run out of water.
We might be observing the birth of Iranian democracy in the protests of the past few weeks, but it is more likely that we are watching the slow-motion train wreck of a once-great nation in all its gory detail. As I noted in an Asia Times analysis this morning, the most violent protests, e.g. the burning of a police station near Isfahan captured on this video, happened in the boondocks where water has run out. The river that runs through Isfahan, a legendary city of gardens in the desert, literally has run dry. Some Iranian officials warn that tens of millions of Iranians will have to leave their homes for lack of water. The country has used up 70% of its groundwater and its literally drying up major rivers to maintain consumption. It's the worst ecological disaster in modern history.
The Islamic Revolution presided over an orgy of corruption, brutality, and mismanagement. Despite the Obama administration's cash infusion and the lifting of sanctions on oil exports, the government is nearly bankrupt. It has allowed several major banks to fail, wiping out the savings of millions of depositors...

I'd like to see some actual stats on that. I suspect there are a couple of African countries that might just "out-clap" Iran, so to speak...

If they could employ some Middle Ages scientists and learn to turn oil into water they could solve that problem.
Another correction is to start Senior Citizen Suicide Club instead of wasting their young people on this job.
I wonder why Iran hasn’t reached out to a neighbor in the region who has the most advanced technology in the world for desalination of seawater. This country, who at one time in the 1970’s was a great friend of the Persian people, gets 60% of its drinking water from the desalination of the oceans. I can’t think of a reason they haven’t asked this other nation for assistance in this crisis. I guess it just wouldn’t be kosher.

Whole country running out of water. That sounds pretty cursed to me.
That would be tantamount to admitting that the God of Israel is greater than Allah.
A whole generation of young men lost to the Iraq war. So they didn’t grow up, get married and reproduce. The mullahs sought to take a modern near “western” country back to the Middle Ages. Using terror and tyranny to do so. Where there never was any “civilization” like in tribal areas in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Islam may be able to survive… but not when the “decadent western” life has been seen, it must be enforced with terror...which will quickly exhaust the nation. Are we seeing Islam is its last violent death woes?
I had an uncle who worked in the oil fields of Saudi Arabia… he lived in a gated western style complex. The government sought to limit any contact with the locals. He said when the “good devout” Muslim officials they were allowed to meet with, came into the compound… they always wanted porn and booze. Western “decadence”, the ultimate weapon! #RustyIrony
No problem, they can just bring in African and South Asian Muslims to repopulate, like France.

Indeed, I doubt the Mullahs are allowing anyone, particularly foreigners, to collect real info on VD rates among the population
Survival of the Unfit
Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution (often referred to as The Theory of Survival of the Fittest) describes the positive effects resulting from any “pressure” on an animal species that removes the least fit among the species and allows only the most fit of the species to reproduce. Many of us are well aware of this “Survival of the Fittest” theory, but few are aware that Darwin also makes mention of the negative effects resulting from unlimited reproduction of a species’ least fit when the weak, the lazy, and the stupid are left unchecked.
We like to think otherwise, but our species, Homo sapiens-sapiens, isn’t that long “out of the trees” and the same laws of nature that affect all of God’s creatures apply equally to us. If we were to observe any other species that had been allowed to reproduce without limitations, we would know immediately what the consequences will be.
Whenever the weak; lazy; and stupid of a species are allowed to reproduce unimpeded by predators that feed off the weak; lazy; and stupid, they soon outnumber the strong, productive, and intelligent. When the weak/lazy/stupid dominate the gene pool, the entire population becomes weak/ lazy/stupid, and then the population collapses.
Iran also has an estimated three million+ narcotics users (or about one in ten adults).
