I am not sure that the US schools turn out enough people without a ‘studies’ degree of some sort to take on all the potential techy positions that would open up if we said goodbye to our imported workers.
Well good point but let’s get to that empirical data and then allow ONLY merit based aliens.
People are studying what they believe will allow them to pay off their student loans (I’ve run into no “studies” majors yet and the department seems to survive by having courses inflicted on students with other majors). Tech has gone out of its way being unfriendly.
I am it IT and work with Indians and have some as customers. Trust me, we’d be fine.
They do turn out enough grads in all areas and that does not include the million plus experienced IT and tech workers who have been put out of jobs by H1Bs.
The “high level qualifications” that the Indian workers come here with are largely faked or distorted. The ones who are brought here to get an American degree usually make it through by means other than study and learning and freak out if they get any assignment grade less than an A.
As salaries increase more will major in STEM; it is called supply and demand. Works with wages and career choices also.
