My advice to you is to run like the wind away from IT.

You better prepare for the other half of that dual-major to be your primary income source once you’re tossed out on the street at 30 for being an obsolete STEM engineer.

This country can’t employ the army of IT folks who have lost their livelihood.

I see your point and it’s valid. Actually, all the President seems to be doing is, getting rid of the EOs that the moron, before him, put in place.

But, if he can get the RAISE ACT passed, which will be difficult, a lot of these issues, like the H1B visa, will be dealt with in a, Pro American way, and codified into federal law. I think he’s doing what he’s doing to show the people how much potential there is, out there.

The countdown begins.

H1Bs are for 6 years.
Soon we will hear Schumer, Pelosi, and the MSM telling us that these job stealers are now almost Americans and should stay and be made citizens.

We allowed it. We can prohibit it!

Terminating the H-1B program solves but one problem. There also is the program of farming out IT work to India and Mexico such as engineering drafting work by computer, thereby denying many American mechanical draftsmen their livelihood. Check with any Engineering & Construction company and find out where they have their mechanical drawings made.

They do turn out enough grads in all areas and that does not include the million plus experienced IT and tech workers who have been put out of jobs by H1Bs.

The “high level qualifications” that the Indian workers come here with are largely faked or distorted. The ones who are brought here to get an American degree usually make it through by means other than study and learning and freak out if they get any assignment grade less than an A.

I want it eliminated. We have no shortage of skilled people. We do have a lot of highly capable tech people unemployed or underemployed because they are over 40 and have been pushed out.

What, Americans don't go into medicine anymore?

There is a bottle neck when it comes to teaching hospitals. For almost 40 years the AMA said that we had enough and so there was no need for any more.

Of course the need for doctors kept expanding but since the number of slots remained the same unless your grades were really extra ordinary (or you were specially favored) you were not going to get in.

They claimed this improved the quality of doctor but we didn't need the medical profession just made up the totally brilliant. We also needed the guys who could listen to your lungs and tell you that you either had a cold and should get rest and plenty of fluids or you needed a more aggressive form of treatment.

My current doctor is ready to retire and is having a hard time finding a doctor to sell his thriving practice to.

It does not offer much chance to play Dr. House but plenty of chance to tell people green and yellow is not a happy color when you are coughing it up.

Getting back to the bottle neck, the result was that we either had to import, go overseas for your residency or choose another profession. Ever notice how many "law schools" suddenly popped up? That is where the bright young people went.

We have gotten a few teaching hospitals added recently which helps about as much as a cough drop. We need about twice as many as we currently have.

Obsolete at 40 is wildly optimistic. That’s why I told BlackAdderess he’d be pushed out by 30.

If you’re 40 & looking for work in this field, this is a good example at what you’re facing:

Why wait? There’s nothing stoping the H1B holders & NASSCOM to shop for a sympathetic judge to overturn any modifications to the H1B visa system.

My memory is a bit fuzzy on this story but I believe maybe ten years ago(?) there was a waving of the restrictions and an expansion of the H1B program to let in about 400,000 doctors, mostly, if not all, from East Asia. Lord knows there must have been because I’ll tell you, southern NJ where I am is “New Bombay’’.

I made it to 47. But alas, they finally got me. Two millennials that worked for me wanted my job. They spread false rumors far and wide. Sabotaged servers and code. They created disaster and both pointed fingers at me. So much for me mentoring them and protecting them ... sigh. No decency in that generation.

As salaries increase more will major in STEM; it is called supply and demand. Works with wages and career choices also.

Well as I said, I’ll have two degrees and a pile of certifications when I get out. I can either do one of them and keep my hand in the others with volunteer and hobby work or I can go cross-discipline which would take me into tech or an entrepreneurial track. I don’t really know what more I can do than that.

Here in the Atlanta area we have entire subdivisions of these Indian H1-B tech workers. They are everywhere.

Well it looks like they will be going back, and to tell you the truth India has had it’s hands full with China encroaching on them. Hopefully some of those going back will use their skills to make their home country stronger and better able to resist.
