California offers some of the broadest protections and rights to undocumented immigrants in the country, and the California Values Act, which went into effect Jan. 1, makes those protections even stronger.
Indeed, the law also known as SB 54, or the sanctuary state law will have a significant impact, particularly for certain people. It will also eventually shed light on the way local law enforcement interacts with federal agencies, like Border Patrol, the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
But particularly in San Diego County, where there are high concentrations of federal law enforcement and numerous joint local and federal operations and task forces intended to tackle border-related crimes, its still unclear just how far the new protections extend.
For example, the Escondido Police Department was awarded a $250,000 federal grant in December to hire new officers and the federal government made clear that cooperation in immigration enforcement was a big driver in who was chosen, reported the Union-Tribune.
Sheriff Bill Gore said all the politics around SB 54 created some internal conflict for him. On one hand, if the 200,000 to 300,000 undocumented immigrants estimated to live within the departments jurisdiction are scared to come to law enforcement to report crimes or be witnesses, that could create a huge public safety issue.
On the other hand, he said, There are people who are in the county illegally who do bad things, who smuggle drugs or commit violent crimes, and I dont want the politics of what is going on to get in the way of public safety.

This should be declared unconstitutional.
It violates the Equal Protection Clause by targeting a specific group for special treatment not given to all Americans.
There is a potential positive side to this. Other states can drive out illegal aliens, let them overrun California. ICE can set up checkpoints on all roads out of California and control the infestation. Heck, California already has entry check stations, let Border Patrol do same on exit. Maybe this can be constructively leveraged.
criminal invaders are not immigrants
Here is a copy of a DETAINER:
IT IS ONLY PLACED AGAINST THOSE ALREADY IN POLICE/PRISON CUSTODY!
NOT FOR VICTIMS/WITNESSES OF CRIMES!!!
Sheriff Gore is ethically compromised, IMHO.
He still refuses to issue concealed carry permits to nearly everyone.
He plead the 5th in the Congressional hearing of the Riby Ridge raid.
“The exact role that Sheriff William Gore played in this incident is unclear he plead the 5th and refused to speak to investigators in the Congressional hearing following the incident. However, he was the bureau chief of the FBI office in charge at Ruby Ridge, and likely played a prominent role in the decision making process. The Sheriffs Departments abrupt and aggressive censorship of Karras posts referencing the Ruby Ridge connection makes us all the more suspicious that he committed wrongdoing.”
Leno,in his last years, was brave enough to refer to them as "undocumented democrats".
I want to know just how many illegals that live within the departments jurisdiction come to law enforcement to report crimes or be witnesses.
Frankly, I bet that is a bog load of baloney.
Well said.
Why should the FBI offer fingerprint identification services to Kalifornia authorities? Just let Kalifornia operate their own fingerprint database. They can purchase copies of the records presently on file; on paper, of course.
The same would hold true for any federal DNA database.
Rob a bank in Kalifornia and flee to another state? Too bad, so sad. Take care of it yourself, Kalifornia.
Sounds like an opportunity to practice "the art of the deal".
as head cop of a border town, I’d be embarassed to admit I had 200,000 to 300,000 illegals living illegally in my town. That’s a lot of low-income electric, water bill, food, school and housing subsidies that could have helped poor citizens get a leg up. Sure justifies a large police department, tho. Except in the hispanic community, snitches get stitches since most disputes are solved intra-familia.
I thought they were “Encouraged then Ignored Invaders”.
