That could work in old Texas, only because the powers-that-be would back up the Ranger's actions.
Yeah, send in a Legionnaire, he shoots or beats up some "refugees/migrants", the EU Court gets involved and demands his imprisonment. The Legion then declines any further involvement.
The French police could have handled it, IF they had the right to shoot-to-kill anybody violently assaulting them, to include any rioters who get started in response to the first shooting. Things would settle down real fast.
