A ministry spokesman said the talks will be focused around the upcoming Pyongchaeng Winter Olympics in March as well as other issues of mutual interest concerning inter-Korean ties.
They added, North Korea is also scheduled to meet with the International Olympic Committee next week after expressing their recent interest in taking part.
This comes after Defense Secretary James Mattis announced that the U.S. and South Korea would hold off on joint military drills, with plans to revisit the issue after the games.
The declaration also comes on the heels of a New Years day speech by dictator Kim Jong Un in which he demanded an immediate end to the exercises.
In an unexpected move by North Korea, the isolated state opened up their cross-border hot-line with South Korea earlier this week for the first time under President Moon Jae-in.
