Smoking was considered de classe by women up until the forties or so....drinking was not routine by women in general until after the mid fifties

You know a few examples becase of people you know. That is a comparatively small sample

I made no comment about women smoking during pregnancy initially. You threw that in. It is drinking during pregnancy that has the damaging effects on babies in utero. Culturally women were not big drinkers because if a woman was a big drinker she was considered loose and of low morals
