Thanks to both of you for trying to help me on this.

I have no formal training in statistics.

To my eye, the main issue here is that NASA’s historical data on temperature anomalies - all the way back to 1880 - can be altered by new anomaly data entered in 2017.

How does that happen?

If the historical anomaly data is not permanent, why is it important, why do we even bother to preserve it?
