What the proud NeverTrumper Bret Stephens either fails to grasp or chooses to ignore is that the primary God-given purpose of civil government is to punish evildoers (1 Peter 2:13-14). In other words, civil government’s chief purpose is to administer justice. That is exactly what President Trump has pledged to do - and judging by the reactions of Bret Stephens and his fellow Hillary suppoters, that is what President Trump is actually doing.
I now recall what had me so exercised by a Stephens WSJ column a while back. He stated as “conservative” the conceit that constitutional government was robust! No, the Republic must be husbanded. It is an experiment, and it could fail if we neglect it.The assumption that nothing can go wrong no matter how the Constitution is abused is pure “liberalism.”
