I have a technical question: Aren’t portraits of people forbidden in Islam? How can there be a portrait of the Supreme Ayatollah?

Only a portrait of Mohammad is forbidden. All his minions have no problem with adulation. Nor did Mao or the current leader of North Korea.

No graven images is more of a fundamentalist Sunni thing, the Shi’ites have whole bunch of “holy men” with reputed magic powers that they keep pictures of, or visit the graves of, hoping for some benefit.
