Women with hyphenated last names are usually feminist harpies. The men they're married to are castrated doormats. Perhaps this explains some of Ciccariello-Maher's psychosis.
I was going to post something similar, with one caveat:
My mother, widowed after 50+ years, remarried and became hyphenated to honor both my father and their marriage as well as her new husband.
That’s about the only time I see hyphenation as a good thing.
