St. Louis city leaders hope that a program to give cash in exchange for guns Saturday will help curb the city’s increasing violence.
But experts say gun buybacks — while popular — are ineffective.
That doesn’t sway the St. Louis mayor.
“Frankly, if we get one, or two, or 10 guns off the street that would have been used in a serious crime, I will consider that a success,” Mayor Lyda Krewson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
“There is not one thing that we can do that will solve this. We have to do a lot of different things on a lot of different levels. Gun buyback is just one of those things.”
St. Louis area residents handing guns over to authorities can get $200 for assault rifles and guns with a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds, $150 for shotguns and rifles, and $100 for handguns.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports hundreds of people have already turned out for the weekend buyback.
All guns must be unloaded when turned in, and the buyback is anonymous.
The buyback effort was announced by St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and Department of Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards earlier this month. The idea, they said, is to encourage the public to hand in guns they suspect could be used in a crime.
“I’m trying to reach good people that are willing to turn in guns that are perhaps in their homes unlawfully, good people like neighbors that have seen children walking the street with guns,” Edwards said.
As of Friday, St. Louis had 203 homicides this year — a 21-year high.
Describing a region “awash in guns,” Krewson urged city residents to report crimes.
“The level of violence in our city is at a crisis level,” Krewson said.

My own bent is to be an old fashioned liberal, one of the kind that didn’t believe in trying to beat everybody over the head to control them, but who did solidly believe in a sovereign yet gracious God. America has much room to be even greater than it had been through a better grasp of God than ever before. Whether it can or will occupy that room, only God knows, but we are not amiss to pray earnestly for it. As God controls what souls are born at what times.
When a significant slice of violent criminals is your government, that gets tougher.

Don’t turn any in. Keep for the protection of yourself since you will be at the mercy of gun criminals that will kill you. Buy more guns.

Now there is a person who is thinking.
The mayor should offer $2,000 to $10,000 per head of criminals who are turned in. Amount to be determined by charges to be filed.
Say $2,000 for car theft, 10 for a rapist or murderer.
More cost effective than tracking them for a long period to catch them by conventional means.

It seems that the arrogance of moralists often far exceeds their understanding.
There isn’t any substitute for God. God is one of a kind. This was of course C. S. Lewis’s main subject of discourse.
Full fledged witness protection programs might be needed today.
But all those guns are probably keeping a bad problem from becoming an even worse one.
Since we actually have a thug problem, not a gun problem, maybe we could get single mothers and grannies to turn in their kids? At least an arguable case can be made that we paid for them.

Of course actually enforcing the Law is something these idiots don’t want to consider since most of the lawbreakers are of the protected classes.
